robert_mason Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 I'm gonna solo this route Weekend of July 5th. Second time in Cascades, what should I expect on this route? Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 lots of people. a path to the summit in the snow. Â Never eat yellow snow! Quote
Juan Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Expect to be bummed when you think you're at the top and realize how much farther you have to go to reach the true summit. Take skis or a snowboard. Quote
scot'teryx Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Went up last weekend on the slog Long approach right now, so be aware. Here's my trip report: http://www.nwog.org/reports/060202adams.htm  I saw Dru up there smoking in the summit hut, wanking off like a gaper Quote

Figger_Eight Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 quote: 8am - AMS I am hurting real bad. Tom and I are in the back of the group, going slow but steady. I note the fact that I must be suffering from AMS, but try and think about other things, but I can hardly breath. 5 steps, breath for 5 minutes. Again and again and again. I almost feel like I am going to have a panic attack. Jesus Christ Scott...it's friggin' Mt. Adams. It was really that bad?!? Quote

jon Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 No I'm pretty sure that was dru you saw, but your wife wankin him off. Â Don't let the fact that this is an "easy" route give you the impression that it doesn't require much of skillset to climb. In "perfect" conditions it's not a problem if you can handle the long slog, I've seen people going up in Tevas with only a bottle of water. That's fine hurray for them. Â I've also been there when there was a white out on the summit, with a guy in different group become so disoriented that he went down the wrong side without taking his pack. Luckily he found the PCT and found his way down and made it back safetly to Cold Springs. Â When you are coming down there are typically a few prominant glissading trails coming down from the false summit to the lunch counter. Make sure you have an axe and know how to use it. You can get going pretty fast on those things and there can be rocks and such in the middle of those trails. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 I disagree with ya jon. The only skillset one needs is how to use a compass and understand what downhill means. Head south when weather comes. That is 180 degrees and or downhill for those who have not learned yet. Â If you're that worried don't climb it in marginal weather. Â I think when I did it it took me 3 hours 45 minutes from the car with lunchbreak. Although it was later in the year.... Easiest 12,000 foot route I ever saw in the Cascades. mikeadam Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Oh yeah, and pill your water if you take any off that thing. I took some just below the false summit, thought I'd pilled it (????), but then got giardia for the first and hopefully the last time. Quote
Cpt.Caveman Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Here's a shot on the summit. Â How many have ever seen the shack? Probably buried right now............ Â Â [ 06-07-2002, 02:13 PM: Message edited by: Cpt.Caveman ] Quote
hikerwa Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Scotty, not to harsh on you too badly, but diamox, come on. It's 12K feet. HAPE, I would not expect this from someone like yourself who has been up much more challenging peaks, such as Mt. Si, Tiger Mountain and the like. Â I am truly dissappointed. Â and as far as diamox working to alleiviate the effects of AMS, I do not beleive it works as a preventative if taken before going to altitude. Â although you could use your prescription to Viagra.... Quote

Sweet pic. When did you take that? I've only seens bits and peices melting through, even late season.  They used to ride asses up the SS route. Quote

jon Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 I've never seen it that exposed, what year did you take that Ray? Last time I climbed Adams (2 years ago?) there was this dude who was spending a month on the summit. Anybody else run into this guy? Quote
iain Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Hope he packed out a month's worth of "lawn sausage," as some have called it. Otherwise must've been pretty funky up there. Quote
mikeadam Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Jon-I think it was like October 15th of 2000. That guy camping on the summit has a website somewhere. Does anyone know which one it is? Quote
Rodchester Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Hikerwa: Â "and as far as diamox working to alleiviate the effects of AMS, I do not beleive it works as a preventative if taken before going to altitude." Â Actually it is generally accepted as being effective when used before going to altitude. In fact most all of the literature on it states that you should take it one to two days prior. I know many take it "as needed" as opposed to a regimented daily dosage, but it is oten taken that way. Â And Caveman - what about declination - isn't it something like 18 degrees here? Quote
iain Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 Funny how Scott'ware posts once and the thread is instantly off-topic, insulting, and hilarious. and then he never posts again to the thread! Such restraint. Quote
allthumbs Posted June 7, 2002 Posted June 7, 2002 How bout' a nice poem of commemoration -- Â A fart can be quiet, A fart can be loud, Some leave a powerful, Poisonous cloud. Â A fart can be short, Or a fart can be long, Some farts have been known, To sound just like a song. Â Some farts do not smell, While others are vile, A fart may pass quickly, Or linger awhile. Â A fart can create A most-curious medley, A fart can be harmless, Or silent, but deadly. Â A fart can occur In a number of places, And leave everyone With strange looks on their faces. Â From wide-open prairies, To small elevators, A fart will find all of us Sooner or later. Â So be not afraid Of the invisible gas, For always remember, That farts, too, shall pass. Quote
