Are there any bald guys out there who really think that they look just as good 15 years into male-pattern baldness and resent those who suggest otherwise? That's not what I said, that's not what the original quote said, and that's not what Toast said. The quote from Derbyshire, whoever that is was that "at age 36 the forces of nature have won out over the view-worthiness of the unsupported female bust," and that the "salad days" which I take to mean sexual attractiveness, are from age 15 to 20. That's simply ridiculous. Of course there are women over 36, and certainly over 20, who are not only view-worthy, but are stunningly sexy. Many more are love-worthy and fuck-worthy, even though they don't have the bodies of a 20-year-old. I think it takes a mature man and life experience to recognize that. There's nothing PC about it. While I think that adults who knowingly gawk at highschoolers are creepy, and probably have some other issues going on, I don't think they necessarily qualify as pedophiles. JayB- posession of Child Pornography (nude pictures of those under 18) and Statutory Rape (sexual conduct with someone not of the age of consent)are sex crimes and can require you to be a registered sex offender in some jurisdictions. I found it disgusting that a writer could opine the above thoughts on the website of the National Review - a magazine that supports the current sodomy laws and reviles gays as perverts. But anyway - yeah - I suspect that there's definitely a Hawthornesque subtext running through the tirades of quite a few public moralists. With respect to the laws you mention - I fully support the laws that we have and am glad that they're there to protect minors from all sorts of creepy folks who might take advantage of them, but I also think that there's clearly a difference between someone who meets someone sporting a fake ID at a bar, and the furtive looking guy with the white, windowless Econoline crusing around the periphery of the local playground... If the writer is talking about women older than the age of consent then there is no hyprocisy whatsoever (and it is as low as 16 in many states). And the excerpt posted appears to be merely talking about physical attractiveness / beauty of youth, and says nothing about photographing or having sex with them. On the other hand, consider someone who claims to be outraged by such "hypocrisy" and yet supports groups like the ACLU, an organization that "defends" the free speech "rights" of pedophiles (e.g. NAMBLA)... In fact the sexual abuse of young people (especially girls) are often supported in the name of unfettered "free speech" - a characteristic position of the left... There are certainly cultures or groups that take things to extremes (indiginous polynesian cultures on one end and the whole heroin chic thing on the other) but in general women who are in the 40's and in good shape physically and mentally are much more attractive then the chicks who are skin and bones at 17 or significantly overweight at 20. Of course as people age they're physical condition often goes to shit but that's a seperate story. In the last 20 years i've watched my dad go from being in great alpine climbing shape, to sporting a pretty good belly, and it has much more to do with activity level than age. So is the average 40 year old more likely to be couchbound and overweight and therefore rathe unattractive? Probably OOps!
