TeleRoss Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 (edited) I saw this little guy up on Triumph today. Kinda like a little skinny fox like thing. Edited July 26, 2005 by snoboy Quote
TeleRoss Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 Pine Martin was about the only thing that I could think of but I've never seen one before...that's kinda cool. Really curious little guy/gal, came up pretty close before going around a little rib and out of sight. Saw him/her/gal up pretty high on Triumph, wonder what he/she was looking for up there? Quote
Blake Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Pine martens are like foxes that climb trees and eat squirrels. Brown on the back, red on the belly. Did you find a neutrino up there as well? Quote
Rad Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Yes, a pine marten. Â Good photo. They're usually shy. Â They like to eat Quote

goatboy Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Was the marten on the NE Ridge, or at the notch, or where was he??? Quote
Alex Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 Its not a pine marten, martens are larger and you'd not see one in the alpine. (If you must know, I worked with pine martens doing wildlife bio one year). I believe thats a long tailed weasel. Quote
spicoli11 Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 I was visited by one of these "weasels" up high recently. It wanted my smoked salmon.....pretty agressive for a little guy Quote
TeleRoss Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 hmmm. It didn't look like a weasel at all. Much more fox-like. It was up high on the NE Ridge. I had maybe done about 4 raps or so when I saw him. I think I was coming up to a flattish section below a rise. So maybe 2/3 of the way up the ridge. Weird. Quote
Dru Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 But... your photo doesn't look foxlike at all. Even if Alpinfox is a weasel. Quote
Alex Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 yeah I am not sure. looking at the larger pic now, it does look like a marten, but if there is a marten on the ridge on Triumph (that will survive the week, anyway) I'd be pretty impressed - they are typically forest dwelling and eat (alot of) small rodents. The marten in your pic might be a juvinile or a female, which tend to be alot smaller (700g or less) than the males (which weigh about 1 kg adult). Â when we were working with them, we would have to sedate them before we could handle them. A pissed off weasel is pure 110% viscous rage! Quote
sobo Posted July 26, 2005 Posted July 26, 2005 ...A pissed off weasel is pure 110% viscous rage! Â Sounds a lot like most of my old GFs... Quote
TeleRoss Posted July 26, 2005 Author Posted July 26, 2005 It just struck me as being fox-like. That was the closest resemblance I could think of. Especially its face and tail. Attached is a photo of a marten from a web search. That is pretty much exactly what it's face looked like. Quote
