And that, I think, is precisely why no-one bothers to utter the word anymore. They're afraid of the answers and instead focus on action-reaction. Why is the dirty little word that no-one should ever mention. Why do we execute juveniles? Why do we refuse to recognize that the planet is going to shit? Why do we bomb other countries? Why do we have 16 year old girls getting stomach-reduction surgery? Why? Why? Why?

i sugest thease questuions

Why am I here?

Why do I exist?

What is my purpose?

you can not fit your purpose into the greater purpose of being until you figure it out wink.gif

as soon as you believe that a writer or scientist can answer thease for you, you have already given up

Good point! There is alot more to life than what someone else can tell you or you can read in a book. It's not always about us. There is a greater good to consider!

Why were we put on earth? What do we have to do? What is our purpose?

"Greater Good" Good lord, Liberals have melted your mind. There is an "I", and it is the most important thing you can consider because it is the one thing you can control. Discover the "I".

What is concrete?

I'm glad you asked. Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand, several sizes of aggregate (gravel), and certain chemicals, called admixtures, that promote curing, enhance strength and/or workability, or improve flowability. Oh, forgot potable water.

actually Greg, potability is not an issue...otherwise everything in the 3rd world would've collapsed by now...

Potable water IS required in all the specs I have to adhere to, as well as ACI 318. I'm not in the 3rd world so that is a paper tiger argument.

P.S. Not really sure what "paper tiger" means, but I wanted to use it in a sentence today. j/k tongue.gif

Do you really feel it is necessary to hurt my feelings and diss on me? Maybe you need to think less about the "I" and more about the __________ - you guess. madgo_ron.gif

No such action was intended. I was simply commenting on what you term the "greater good" and the fallacy thereof. This "greater good" you speak of is the justification that the power grabbers in this country use to increase the scope and realm of governmental control. "For the greater good" is what FDR used to turn the Interstate Commerce Clause on its head and pursue his socialistic ideas through the New Deal.

The 'greater good' that I speak of has to do with sacrifices of yourself for others you love. It is not about "I" - it is about being selfLESS for your family and friends. How often do you sacrifice something for your child? smirk.gif For your family or friends? Does it not return to you when you give to others? That is the greater good I speak of! thumbs_up.gif

You can have your Ann Raynd philosophy and use it towards the ways of the world - but with families I don't believe it is 100% true.

In large part, it can be applied to families and all relationships, since there is, as you purport, a return on your 'investment' in that relationship, gift, action, what have you. Selflessness is actually a misnomer as you use it. You are making investments in your relationships for ends of your own; this serves your 'self'. Your 'self' begins with your mind; you make choices via some decision-making process. Given that, it is not 'selfless'. 'Selflessness' is denial of your mind.

I can understand your point and agree with part of it.

But forgiveness and love are selfless acts. If you can do these two things after being hurt - it is selfless. Only when there are no expectations attached.

I don't want to butt in on this little argument, but everytime I hear Randian Ethical Philosophy I can't help thinking of Brian Medlin's logically convincing argument "Ethical Egoism is Inconsistent"

I can't find the article online but I found a lecture outline that describes the argument. I'd suggest this read for anyone who contends that selfless acts are really selfishly motivated. It's a logical fallacy.

That's BS if you have kids...

I have to agree with you man! thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif Two thumbs up.

The true sacrifice of love grows even stronger when you have children. What is wrong with so many parents today - they think of themselves first. madgo_ron.gif
