AlpineK Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 Yesterday at Crystal was insane!! Deep, light powder all day. Snorkel Alert! Snorkel Alert! Snorkel Alert! Snorkel Alert! Snorkel Alert! Quote
eternalX Posted March 7, 2003 Author Posted March 7, 2003 Went up to Alpental after work and it fuxoring ruled! Heading up to stevens tomorrow. hopefully the poor visibility will keep the hordes away. Quote
fern Posted March 7, 2003 Posted March 7, 2003 I looked out my window today and saw an inch of fresh here at sea level so I thought "Hey, it'll be deep and sweet a 3000' higher on the hill, I should skip school!" and I looked at the mountain conditions and they only got 2" on a 2' base. Quote

Off_White Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 It was an embarrassment of riches today (friday). I actually saw someone with a snorkel. I got stuck in the deep stuff because 20 degrees was just not steep enough to move through it, but fortunately I had my Cousteau Society card with me. I just called up Jacques, and he brought the Calypso overhead and lowered me a line. Quote
cman Posted March 8, 2003 Posted March 8, 2003 deep deep deep powder powder powder incredible, i am worked though. a couple of times i came into the flats and had to break trail, waist deep. not to mention all the blind turns i was making Quote
allison Posted March 9, 2003 Posted March 9, 2003 FUN HUMBLING FUN HUMBLING FUN HUMBLING FUN HUMBLING Hee hee, not as much as an ego-fest as last weekend, but way fun. My eleven year old friend had a great time too, her first big pow day ever. You might have seen us at Crystal yesteday, we were the two babes that kept yelling FRESHIEZZZZZZ!!!! Quote
Beck Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 That snow has been FINE! Ohmigod, it's truly chest deep powder out in the cascades this weekend, so rare- Snorkel alert is right! never have i seen so many people, INBOUNDS, sunk up to their necks after an augering crash renders them completely helpless. All day long, seeing just peoples' heads and shoulders sticking out of the snow, saying "I'm stuck, I'm stuck" over and over again! The snow is way dangerous right now, though- by saturday afternoon where i was at, the snow off piste was setting up into cohesive soft slabs, shooting cracks and releasing in big blocks. Glad I was in the trees, but this makes the tree wells doubly dangerous, every little terrain trap was loaded and ready to release, i hope for the best for anyone out in the backcountry today. Quote
eternalX Posted March 10, 2003 Author Posted March 10, 2003 Alpental on thrusday night kicked ass and stevens on saturday morning was even better. it's truly a different sport when the snow is that good. Quote
iain Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 the best is watching people try to step in to their bindings only to posthole to their waists. I love it when you can pitch forward head over heels and just keep going w/o skipping a beat. good snow. Quote
allison Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 It is 38 and raining at the base of Alpental as of two minutes ago. Quote

glen Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 Just got back from a weekend at Whistler-Blackcomb where it was definitely not 38 and raining. Got first tracks down seventh heaven with fresh snow on sunday. Damn that place kicks ass! Quote
JoshK Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 Well, it wasn't 38 and raining here this weekend either. Check out whistler's weather report, it's well above freezing in the village now. At least you can generally get high enough to escape the sludge down low. Quote
Jim Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 Woo-hoo. Was up at gappertimmy land for the amazing dump on Friday. Excellent backcountry practice as nothing was groomed and the average was knee deep. Over at Outback it was hip-deep. I stayed with the tele-gear though it would have been perfect for a board. It must have warmed up a few degrees on Saturday as the snow was noticebly denser. Spent Sunday morning dragging myself up a few routes at Smith before flying home (courtesy of work). Quote
gapertimmy Posted March 10, 2003 Posted March 10, 2003 the freshiez have turned quickly into slushiez. becky and i went out for a few turns this am, and it was manky mashers. more of the same dampness expected even above 5000' this week, with a slight chance of snow towards the weekend. that was a quick winter huh?
