I mostly agree with what you're saying however sometimes countries/corporations can move backwards or remain static. In the book Guns, Germs, and Steel the author gives the example of China, I forget the date, but they had a very advanced navy/merchant fleet, but after a bunch of ships sunk in a typhoon the government discouraged improvements in sea travel and many other technologies. China lost its big lead in technology over Europe and eventually Europeans viewed them as backwards. I personally believe that the government needs to put money into alternative energy projects in much the same way as they did during the space race. The space race led to all the fancy pants computers we have today.

I think europe would be a better model in some respects. Gas isn't that much more in Canada right now, but it's cost a lot more in Europe for a long time. The downside is that Europe has a much better rail system; so you don't need the car in the first place.

What the fuck are you talking about. You are the delusional guy in this case. The pope's father was anti nazi; the pope was forced to join hitler youth and the army. He deserted the army when he could. Not every German was for Hitler. I understand you don't like KK's politics, but you're acting like a fucking idiot in this case.

You're off the deep end.

That may be true, but killing somebody's innocent kid is no little thing; also there's a lot more folks out drinking and driving that dropping LSD. Even if it was legal I don't think there's anyway it would become anywhere close to the popularity of Bragging in public your right; among friends may be a different matter.

Wow everybody's all worked up over a picture of the Captain. All I can say is it sounds like a really hot place to be in July; of course Dru's picture looks cold with a thin atmosphere.

Cocaine users, drunks, and pot-smokers don't have random flashbacks, and are not generally susceptible to schizophrenia and other mental illnesses induced by the drug usage... of course I guess that's what makes LSD the "best drug" in the words of a cc-com'er. Hey KK have you ever looked at the warning lables on legal drugs...you should take a look sometime; it's some scary stuff. Anyway I think the cost to society of a legal drug like alchohol is pretty high; and it affects people who aren't even consuming the drug...look at a MADD site for examples. LSD induced psychosis only affects the user. Anyway I don't agree with Dave's view that LSD is, "the best drug." All you have to do is look at folks like the original lead guitarist of Pink Floyd, Sid Barrett, to see that it can push one into a lifetime of mental problems; however there's no proof that he wouldn't have ended up that way eventually. On the other hand there are a lot of people out there that have done the stuff a handfull of times and aren't confined to a psych ward; they even have jobs and pay taxes and shit. I'm sure you're too straight laced and uptight to even think about that.

That's nothing new. I heard the version of the new pope's life KK posted on NPR.

Maybe Fairweather is still bitter from being picked on and beat up by kids in the science and drama clubs in school.

He should have stuck with those removable stickers folks like to put on SUVs.

Come clean with us Catbird...we know you've, "tested," some of your own creations.

Talking about cutting off funding to military contractors or talking about adding funding to any other government services are both unpatriotic. You should be ashamed

I'm liberal, but I have my own business. Basically I'm a capitalist, and I'll start yelling at you if you work for me but aren't working as hard as I think you should be or are doing something stupid. On the other hand I pay fairly and I don't screw my employees like Walmart does. How does that fit with your paradime Brian? Oh yeah and I don't have a truck requiring a CDL because I think piss tests are facist.

I lived in Boulder for a few years. I never liked the granite in Boulder Canyon. It wasn't chossy, but it sucked in some way. Lumpy's pretty cool; you do have to get used to flairing cracks. I loved Eldo, but it really isn't that big a place, so it's easy to burn out on it. RMNP has a lot of good granite, and it's basically a high alpine cragging area. The only other place I climbed at a lot was Veedawoo; and that place has some awsome granite cragging. All in all there's good cragging around Boulder, but I would say that Colorado lacks any true alpine climbing; at least by my definition...you should see the things they call glaciers. CO may get an advantage over WA in terms of cragging, but Rudy brought up an excellent point that there are a lot of assholes in Boulder. In fact that negative totally outweighs any advantage they might have in craggs or good cragging weather.

You don't have to do anything you don't want to, even if it means wracking up a huge rescue bill because you didn't buy the insurance. Then again you don't have to pay the bill...GW and the State Department will protect you from those commie euro bill collectors.

You sir are a fucking hippy; the rest of you are pig fuckers.

From what I've read you are right in saying that there is a general warming trend that is outside of human control however the majority of science supports the conclusion that humans have had major impact on the rate of warming over the last 100+ years. Now I'm no scientist, so I'm just relaying what I've read that by all accounts is the majority view. I'm not sure what you do, but I don't think you are an atmospheric scientist, so I'm not going to put much weight to your, "views," on climate change. The real question is one of how bad it's going to be and what we should do about it, which is like I said above more of an economic and thus political decision.

This weekend I finally did my taxes...now I've just got to pay up I also made Mike Adamson really mad over at Ass.com...must not hit the hornet nest with a stick.

I'm sure you can find lots of science that has flaws in logic or is biased, however if somebody conducts a study and reports it others are bound to try and reproduce the experiment, especially if the results are unexpected. In the long run bad science can not be reproduced. It seems to me the whole cold fusion thing is a good example. The idea was presented and other scientists tried to duplicate the experiment. In relativly short order the idea of cold fusion was dismissed. In the case of global warming the majority of science has supported the findings since 1995. The real question right now is more of an economic decision, however folks resistant to changes in the status quo try and prevent change by claiming bad science.

That's a thought, what if you could reduce your electric bill by running on a treadmill...hmm.
