My wife and I are in the same boat as you. We were up there the first day it was open to the parking lot and I believe that was the second week of July.

Looking for advice on how to strengthen my fingers, hands and forearms, specifically for climbing. I have been going to climbing gyms to do some bouldering and such and am severely lacking in the forearms, fingers and grip strength. Can anyone recommend some excercises/training aids? Are finger boards worth a try? Thanks!

I'm a fat kid and like to eat! I just field strip MRE's and pack two per day and then pack candy/GU packs for while I am moving.

Boot Sizing - First boots - SCARPA vs LOWA
yellowlab03 replied to Gregory.S.'s topic in The Gear Critic
I've got the Triolet Pro's and love them. I was really hoping to get a pair of La Sportivas and was in the same boat as you, REI bonus plus 20% off. I went in to try out the Sportivas, but the toe box was to narrow for me. I tried on the Scarpa's and they fit perfectly but I wanted a little more boot than the Charmoz. I ended up ordering the Triolet's from Backcountry and am very pleased. I wish I would have know about some of the local gear dealers in WA though as I would rather support them then order stuff online. -
I am a radio guy by trade and never leave my truck without one, usually two. I go way overboard on the emergency signaling arena. Usually will have a radio, plus my garmin rino, VS-17 panel, cell phone, strobe light and a mirror. Looking at borrowing a sat phone from work and also looking at purchasing a PLB or Spot device. I have never taken off into the woods and thought to myself, "Eh I have enough emergency sig stuff, if I get into trouble someone will find me." I don't know about you guys, but I have been in an emergency situation where I didn't have my stuff handy and a damned rescue helicopter flew past me. Had I had my mirror or my radio or my VS-17 panel handy I probably wouldn't have had to make a mad dash back to the truck, then drive an hour down to a ranger station so I could make the call to start a rescue which took an additional 3 hours.

If you are in Vermont, you ought to look up the Army Mountain Warfare school in Jericho. They would have a whole ton of info and they are local to you.

Medical and Utility Pharmaceutics Mountaineering
yellowlab03 replied to Marmot Prince's topic in Climber's Board
If it is the old school quick clot that looks like kitty litter, toss that crap out. It will give you a third degree burn and is no bueno. Kerlix is really good at stopping bleeds, is light and is very compressible. If you are bleeding bad enough that you would need quick clot, a tourniquet (worst case) or kerlix stuffed in to the hole and add direct pressure would be better. -

Motrin, Naproxin and some pepto tabs are all I carry meds wise. Otherwise, it is TQ's, splints, some kerlix and a small roll of tape. -

Word. It sucks what happened to the Ranger, and my condolences go out to her family and loved ones. As a veteran and gun owner this had nothing to do with guns or being a veteran and everything to do with this guy being off his rocker.

I must have a hell of a personality, because I drive a cheap truck and have a small wiener... I really don't see what the wife see's in me. -

Anyone going up from Paradise this Friday? I am looking at just doing a day hike from Paradise to Muir, but would like someone to walk with and maybe pick their brain on the hike up.

Bought this pack as a surprise for my wife, figuring she was a medium... She is not, she needs a small. She took this thing on two, 1 mile hikes behind our house on a gravel road and she wore the pack up to lunch counter on Adams once. After the Adams trip she decided the pack didn't fit her right and she needs a small. The pack is in as new condition, asking $175 obo. If anyone wants more detailed pics just ask! It does come with the small pack that attaches to the outside.

Not mine, I flung mine out the window at 70mph in Yelm... God I'll never hear the end of that one.

Have any of you ever effed up your neck?
yellowlab03 replied to TheNumberNine's topic in Climber's Board
I have messed mine up a few times, last time was jumping out of moving flying things into the water and landed wrong. Probably the worst yet. Pinched or compressed something a few times doing ruck marches with 100lb + packs. Have also messed it up lifting in the gym. The best thing to do is figure out how you messed it up. Did you compress something in your spine, pull a muscle, strain a tendon or jam something? Get to the doc and have them figure out what the best course of action is. I've used a chiro, a physical therapist, message therapist and lots and lots of motrin. Just have to match the treatment to your injury. -
Word, I'd love a place to buy some 1:50,000 US maps for MGRS. This Lat Long stuff is for the birds.
