i think i understand what you were getting at, but i am NEVER willing to fall - sometimes it just happens. i too am a cautious leader...

while i understand yer reasoning for doing this and agree that it probably will give you more confidence while doing tougher moves, it sounds like taking an unnecessary risk, imho. i agree with this 100%. it not enough to know how to just place gear, but to be able to place good gear. placing gear is more than just the gear itself - its about the rock quality, too, and the orientation of the piece... good gear you do not need to worry about trusting.

to actually answer yer question and be a productive part of this thread i'd say that you start as soon as the beer is cold and you quit when the bait is gone - or when you've lost yer rig n tackle b/c you left it too close to the water and some rogue canine knocked it in and away it went!

pretty effective, though, i'm sure, if you can be patient enough to wait for the ice to break off... or just come here... of course you have to get by two security gates and then you'd have find some way to be stealthy enough to not draw attention to yerself (which would be nearly impossible, especially if you are hauling around a big ass net!)

LOTS of sockeye runnin up the columbia thus year - spring chinook and steelys are kinda strugglin, but the summer kings look good so far - from what i've seen, anyway.
