Wow, birding is the second most popular hobby? Then allot of those people are going to be very upset to learn that there is a windfarm going in near to Trout Creek where they have bee issued Golden Eagle kill permits, up to 3 Eagles Kills over the next few years. and the closure of Trout Creek is in direct correlation to this.

Best routes to learn to climb cracks in the NW
stevetimetravlr replied to KyleJ's topic in Rock Climbing Forum
I worry more about the rattlesnakes at Royal Columns then the rock quality. The rock is generally great! The snakes live at the top and only get pissed if you go there,ha! Here's Lucky Larry getting er done at RC this summer. and here is the greeting party at the top. -
Coming soon to your TV on OPB/Oregon Field Guide. The Jim Opdyke special. Go Jim!

? You guys can keep lying about Jeff's rope, but I didn't take it. Sure I took it...that must be why, when I heard I'd taken "Geoff's rope", I immediately tracked down Geoff Silverman to try and figure out what it was all about. Had I taken Jeff Thomas' rope down he'd have it back and you'd have known about it because I would have posted it up here. I don't sneak around doing shit like cutting down trees and destroying route variations - I do what I do out in the open and post up about it here. So no, I didn't take the rope, didn't destroy the trail, but did complain about some fucking moron cutting down the Jimney tree and did vehemently comment on the deliberate rape and destruction of the YW p2 variation by some total pinheads intent on bolting it. Look, you can remain a clueless, lying idiot, or - if you want to lift or modify the closure - get a moderate grip on reality, try to find a modicum of integrity, stop making shit up and lying through your teeth, and learn something about how the closure works and who you'd have to have an honest relationship with in order to attempt to do anything about it.

Kind of like fixed ropes when you think no one is around?

A back up knot beyond the ATC seems to make sense especially if the leader starts to shortfix which could result in a different loading on the anchors.

Fricking even the mellow super chill Mr. Plaidman is a controversial figure, go figure. -
I believe that Mark K. and Shawn C. and one other person set the record for climbing Olympus car to car. It was around 14 hours. They ran up the trail, climbed it, and ran down. I remember Mark was pissed because he stopped to take one photo and Shawn didn't wait and Mark didn't catch him till the trailhead. funny stuff! Edit: They set the record at the time, 13.5 hours, breaking the old record by 1/2 hour. This new 11.5 hour record is quite impressive!

An act of vandalism pure and simple. If they had permission of the Argentines to chop the route, it would be one thing, but I am sure they did not. As many people make their livlihood from this route's attraction down there.

ZimZam, it happens when you are skiing/boarding and ski into or wipe out and go into the air space void under a tree. Because of branches, brush, etc, the snow is not consolidated but when you fall in it, it all sometimes comes down on top of you, and as you stuggle you go in deeper, and the snow packs down on top of you. When the snow is deep its very hard to get traction to move and that makes it even worse, and you can suffocate just like being in a avalanche floudering around in a foot of snow but unable to get your head above water.

Even the most precision controlled castings and welds may still have flaws that only a x-ray can detect. So out of 10,000 biners how many may have a tiny void in the casting? We may never know as its not something that manufacturers like to give out info about.

As far as I am concerned, you better know how to extricate yourself from a tree well, because of exactly the scenario above or worse. I've gone into more then a few of them and this is what I've learned. It really helps to ski with a partner in the trees, and to STAY TOGATHER. if he gets to far ahead and you disappear, he won't hike back up to look for you generally but wait it out, just not knowing whats up. Wear loose fitting clothing, nothing is worse then being in a hole and your clothes restrict you and keep you from being able to move like you need to. Tight clothes around your neck such as tight turtleneck and neck gaiter are the worst, you need to be free to crane your neck anywhich way and breath, I learned this the hard way. Don't panic, thats easy to say, but really you need to stay calm and SLOWLY pick your way out. Its not a avy where you are buried unde tons of snow but a situation where is you think it out and make yourself a breathing space, you should be able to sort it out. Generally if you can get out of your skis or board, you will be able to get yourself out. Its your skis and poles that buried in the snow that tie you down and keep you from moving. So maybe pole straps off in the trees? Just be super wary when the conditions warrant it and ski in control. It doesn't hurt to practice self rescue in a tree well with someone standing by even. Its the wierdest thing to be ripping on the snow one mintue and the next held under and barely able to breath or move the next. Be safe!

A fickle mistres, is that what you were trying to say Plaid? You wish!! and back off on the freeze thing, I have to drive that highway all the time. There is no ice for now, still to warm, 38 degrees in White Salmon currently and the rain is melting all the snow.

Ice Climb in Gorge for Monday 1/16/2012
stevetimetravlr replied to BobInHoodRiver's topic in Climbing Partners
True, but in this case not really. Its been warming up during the day, so just not much ice at all. I've been climbing in a t-shirt the last few days out near Hood River if that tells you anything, but the winds have been honking down near Beacon. If I see some ice, I will whip my camera out! -

I pitched a tent on the Tooth once. But the hot chick in the Mounties party rapped off, and it went away.

I'd like to go back and reclimb the classics at Midnight Rock. Re-visit Castle Rock as well. Do some long routes at Red Rocks. Do some longer routes in Yosemite. Some of the not oft done routes on the upper Town Wall. More mixed ice and rock routes this Spring. yeah!
