too bad yours didn't. At least you wouldn't have internet access to post venomous shit asshole. WOoooooooo! Look at the balls on Brad! Lick my choad. If Jim wants to play the sharp words game, we can go that route. He chose to escalate and I will oblige him. YOU on the other hand appear to have one volume and one mode: Surly Scot.

Hey Jim, I hope your house burns down. Deuces!

I'm no expert, but have worked on a couple wildland/urban interface fire projects, and here's what I gleaned from that expereince. For the homeowner the two items of importance are a defensible space and non-combustabile features of your structure. This inculdes decks - as you point out, but also roofs and walls. So yes, metal roofs can make a difference. At the frontal assault of the fire - likely no, on the fringes, yes. Are folks stupid for living up in the hills? - I don't know. What I do know is that fire cycles have changed dramatically in the west over the past 50 years because of supression management and now climate change and the corresponding cumulative effects. And it's going to get worse. I certainly would not live up in those hills now. Mill Creek in WA? Very differnt fire cycle and not so much a threat and likely to remain so even with climate change. Take a look at the UW Climate Impact Group webpage for some good summaries. Government ineptitude? I'd say we've gotten the government we've asked for. Could 40 more firefighters made a difference? If you lived in that neighborhood what would you have preferred - more or less boots on the ground? The government, decided not to deploy firemen for 2 days until they could hash out who would pay for it. THAT is ineptitude. Also, I live in an URBAN environment and almost lost my house. This is not "mountain living," its urban/suburban living less than a mile from downtown, and right next to 3 major military installations; one of which almost burned to the ground.

You are right Rob, what he said pissed me off but I won't post here what he said because it will only get me madder.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Metal roofs would have done nothing to save these houses. Also, the sites that these houses were built on was like any subdivision in the PNW. You think that Mill Creekers are crazy for living where they do? How about you blame the government for waiting for two days before they decided who was going to pay for it before deploying firefighters? I came back from a deployment not knowing whether my home was going to be there with my wife and son living at a friend's. I live in Colorado Springs proper; Old Colorado City if anyone knows the area. This is a suburb less than a mile from the downtown. If my house could go, it speaks not to my negligence as a homeowner but the ferociousness of the fire and the ineptitude of the government both local and national. You should have heard what the POTUS said. That fucker's got nerve.

Poverty is human nature, wealth and opulence are manmade. Being in Africa right now, I can tell you that the lack of capitalism has not taken a hatchet to poverty in any way.

I think that original post is poignant. At this crossroads where we are exiting two major wars with an insurgency which has distracted our enemies; what is our strategy. I will predict that if we don't have one, the trend outlined in GD's post will continue with an 12 year hiatus in which we took the fight to the enemy. I do not think that all out ground war is the answer for long term sustainability (it can't be) but intelligence services that must be held accountable along with the ability for Special Operations to be given the keys to ensure the Nation's security are essential.

Tell ya what hommes, there are two things that I would like to share which may be applicable in your situation: 1) You NEVER know what the hell someone can do or has. 12 year olds with AK's is an unrealistic example for you, but dudes carry knives, guns and brass nuks. Be careful. 2) If a guy is simply talking shit, pushing like a bitch, let him be the asshole. If he swings, pushes you INTO A GLASS WINDOW ect. Fuck him up or GTFO. These two points are often at odds so you can see where it gets complicated. Just remember, you never know what kind of a psycho, delinquent the guy is. Nowadays, you might err on the walk away side of things. If a guy gets that violent with you I would suggest walking away. If not, kick his ass; hard and then pick him up and shake his hand. DO NOT let a guy push you around like that.

Best sauces I ever had were in Tanzania. They have a lot of Indian influence because the Brits thought that if they show the African savages how well (high caste Indian) savages can act, they might get their act together and serve the Crown. Best Indian food I ever ate was in East Africa but I suppose I have never been to India. Time will tell I suppose...

Source Only one pic today. The up/download speeds are so horrendously slow here that I just don't have the patience to upload much. The only place that's really cool around here is the flight line, but since taking pictures of activities there is strictly verboten, there just isn't really much else here that's worthy of immortalization in digital media. Oh, and no rocket attacks today. Take care and stay safe, y'all! Might want to crop out that guy's ID badge . Sniper's eye misses nothing.

So for eleven years and a trillion dollars we still can't protect the capital and our most secure base. Asymmetric warfare at it's best. We should just walk away, rename it Vietnastan in honor of lessons learned, and call it good. Conditions are not going to improve so keep your wits about you. God you are a fucking idiot; spouting off jargon that you don't understand. 'Asymmetric' has somehow become indecipherable private 'jargon'? I would hope not after spending a trillion bucks perfecting it to the point where we still don't own the roads and can't keep our main base from daily rocket attacks eleven years on. Yep, that's some real secret sauce you're slinging around dude. You still don't have a clue what it means. Just a catch phrase you heard on the news I suppose. At least Wikipedia it or something... Don't blame it on Joe; this is going squarely on the shoulders of the politicians that have been hamstringing us for 11 years. We OWNED Afghanistan with asymetrical warfare in a couple months. Conventional warfare took over (due COMPLETELY to politics) and blamo, full blown shit storm. Read up on the first little bit of the war and ask yourself why we acheived so much in so little time and then lost it all and keep wacking out heads against the wall, so some generals can earn their piece of the pie so they can make cabinet positions, take over agencies ect. Same thing happened in WWII with Bill Donovan/ Hoover and the CIA, Vietnam was no different. Long story short, we did asymetrical warfare better than anyone has in modern times (maybe not than the Afghans against the Russians) and it all got fucked up because careerist politicians and Generals want to get another star or run an agency they have never been part of.
