I have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2. Got it mainly for the manual controls, 16:9 ratio, and 28mm wide lens. I beat it up pretty good and it's still truckin. It only really craps out now from moisture when I sweat into it too much during a trip. Dries out and works fine. The 28mm is real nice to have: http://cascadeclimbers.com/plab/showphoto.php?photo=45231&size=big&cat=500&ppuser=15545

Sweet. Memories... It's the "Sherburne" trail, or "Sherbie" for short. -
Aaaah, ok, that makes sense now.

that's just awesome doug - big props V, the people have a right to know!!

Pancakes... wise choice. I heard Peter Croft eats pancakes and lactose free milk for breakfast. Coincidence?

No worries, there aren't any pictures describing the terrain so I made one. Your second to last pic with the circled buttress - was that taken from the col, looking up? If so, that gully to the right of the circle is the better descent gully (blue line). The better descent gully shouldn't have you traversing East or climbing up to the col. Both of the gullies going South have trees near their top. Doing the NEB route you have the advantage of passing and seeing the descent gully (blue) on your left before reaching the summit. Doing the NF route you don't see it unless you go up the hump East looking for it. From your pics, especially the last one, it looks like you guys took the green line - I recognize the traverse from my first time up there taking that gully and thinking that it was a lot longer than described on Nelson's guide. My second time, going up the NEB instead, I saw the better descent gully and had a moment of realization. The Alt Descent gully curves a little to skier's right at first, is longer, steeper, narrower, and has you traversing climbers right at the bottom to get to the col. The better "actual" descent gully is shorter, straight, less steep, and dumps you right at the col.

Hey, Accidentally left my red BD carbon fiber ski poles at the main Alpental lot yesterday. If you found them I have some beer in it for ya. Doug

On my first trip out there we also took that gully - it's not "wrong", but it's not the best option. On the descent: Is the gully you took for 300ft the one that descends right across from the top out of the NF face, onto the col (with summit on right)? Looks like it is. The better gully to descent runs parallel to the one you took, East of it - no rappelling over buttresses. From the col of the NF route topout just head East up and over a small hump. On the other side of it you'll see the descent gully. The descent gully is the obvious one you can see ascending North from the notch at the top of the SE gully. Confused yet?

I just took a shit, but I'm gonna wait until Monday morning to post the TR so I get the max number of views.

Verizon. I've had reception with it from some cool places.

Hey Piston, Unfortunately I don't have any pics of that section. The groove that I picked was about 30-40' of mostly dry tooling. Sometimes a foot in some ice or snow, maybe a tool on some ice, most times hooking a tool, feet on rock, or just using hands - but not too steep and took thin Bugaboos ok. Nothing falling, just a constant thin stream of spindrift for ambiance. Be safe, have fun!

Trip: Dragontail - Triple Couloirs Date: 2/22/2010 Trip Report: Rachel came out of retirement after her surgery to remove some bionic plates originally meant to enhance her climbing abilities. Now she is just a mere mortal once again, so I can keep up. We had some good times on the TC. As the last tr mentioned, snow conditions in the couloirs were fair and the runnels looked dry - we also took the 2nd variation bypassing them and finishing the small choke below couloir 2. The transition from 2-3 was thin, mixed, and took pins once in a while - fun. The highlight of the day was topping out of the couloirs into the sun, from which we were being blocked from all day long. And man, the weather was just glorious! Rockin the pink gloves Gear Notes: Pins were our friends. Friends were generally unused. Approach Notes: Snow and ice all the way from the gate.

Badass! Man, do I miss the ice. Was this some sort of Nomic meetup that I missed?

What an awesome adventure that must've been! Very cool -
If you're looking for a checklist, the best one I've seen is the one on pg 5 of the AIARE field book. Gyro hit most of the things included in that list and I think he's right - "The checklist isn't much good though without the other skills." AIARE Avy 1 is a great course that should really help you make better decisions and just help you know what to look for - lostsa fun.

AB - the descent is the same and you can do it with one 60m. Do not use the gully that descends from the notch right below the summit cone - the notch where you come out onto from the NF route. If you do the NF, head SE from the notch, up and down the smaller "false summit". You will see another gully on your right, South, with some trees about 20' down it (you might see some slings around the trees). Downclimb or rap this gully for about 170' and this will take you to the flat area where the narrow E rappel gully starts skier's left. Look around for anchors on the N facing rock and start rappelling. I think I have seen as many as 6 anchors along the length of the E gully and one 60m is plenty. If you do the NE Butt you will pass the descent gully on your left before ascending the small false summit.

Superfeet didn't work well for me - just felt too hard. More expensive but I use SOLEs and have for a few years now - support and cushion. IMO, feet is not a place to go cheap, just get what works and hope that it's not the costlier option. If they haven't changed, the basic Superfeet are blue (minimal cushion), green (a little thicker foam), pink (womens sized version of green), and orange (with extra cushioning at the ball of the foot). The rest are specialty - for ice skates (yellow?), with thermal material (red?), dress shoes (black), etc. It's all on their site.
