That may be what makes it so threatening... It could/does happen anywhere. NO WHERE IS SAFE!!!

Also, even if you don't use it much and will probably lose it before it wears out, buy quality, because there is nothing worse than packing cheap gear into the wilds, only to have it fail when you really need it. I've learned that one a few times, not necessarily with knives, but...

I'm hoping I can afford a trip in Oct or early Nov... -
Get one with both... half & half.

You get what you pay for, just like other gear. A $10 knife will be ok for occasional use but won't hold an edge well and likely fall apart if you use it much. I prefer Kershaw but Benchmade are really nice too. I have sent many Kershaw knives back when a tip broke or some other problem and they have always sent me a brand new one. In fact, they just sent me two of these Kershaw "Blackout Serrated" folding knife. I like a blade that is half serrated and half regular/duel edge. Serrated will cut through slings/rope like butter. Also, the spring action blade is nice. The one I have for sale may be a bit bulky for climbing purposes but still a very nice knife. $50 and it's yours. I don't like Buck and Gerber much as they seem to use cheaper steel on most models. Or, get a small multi-tool that will have a knife and other field feature goodies.

Careful what you ask for... His singing will kill you quicker than the fall. -
Skiing is the higher form of descending a snow-capped mountain. At least in one of it's various forms. Thus, part of climbing. Skiing is definitely a major contributor to mountaineering. Just think, in a few months you'll be in Vegas bitching about how hot it is and how much your cactus balls hurt on MtSprayWhiners.cum...

Ahhh - Vegas "The neon cancer spreading across the desert", as I like to call it. "i sense i may have tried their patience - my personality, like my foot-funk or key-lime pie, a bit of an acquired taste" - Quite true, took me a while, but now I can appreciate the foul pleasure of your company, in small doses, of course... -
Greed/money can, and will continue, to taint any activity but there is nothing wrong with hiring a guide to climb something. No more than it's wrong to go on a guided bike ride, ski trip, garden tour, whatever. That said, I've never done a guided climb but it sure sounds appealing as I get older and look forward to the day I can contract out some of the grunt work and relax as if I was staying at the Taj Majal. Enjoying the journey more because I don't have to be doing all the chores...

I agree. Many epic endurance events have happened on the rock and in the alpine by climbers who haven't run a marathon but have done a climbing "marathon" and are happy with that. Prioritize or at least compartmentalize because serious climbing means all batteries need to be charged prior. Although I have yet to run a marathon, I've always felt a lot of the longer climbs with long approaches were at least the equivalent of running a marathon, if not more so... I've wanted to run one but not train for it, just off the couch to see if I am as fit as I think I am. However, each year I move further from 40 and closer to 50, the less confident I am that I could pull it off, unless maybe, I had a beer on a stick dangling in front of me the whole way.

If you have a short day, check out Ultraman at the first pullout. Fun, old slab route, all bolts, but some like a small cam (can't recall what size)for the easier runout at the top. I really like the view from the crescent summit seat. "Rock out with yer..."

Gotta love these win, win scenarios.

Denali stoves.... do whisperlights cut it?
denalidave replied to jesselillis's topic in The Gear Critic
That's why I like the Dragonfly, you can adjust the fuel for cooking and/or fuel economy as needed... It will still crank up the heat like the XGK but also able to coax a delicate dish when required... Pepper Jack QuesadilliIayes at 14.4 are hard enough with a Dragongfly, prolly impossible w a whisperlite, unless you like it chard... -

Does MSR still make the Dragonfly? We (3) were out 35 days on the north side and brought 2 Dragonflies and 1 XGK. Seems like one of them was working all the time, two of them some of the time but usually two were being worked on most of the time as well. Bring plenty of spare parts and take care with the pumps as they tend to break easier in the extreme cold temps. At least that has been my experience. YRMV -
He also killed my uncle, twice... Once in Above the Law and again in Hard to Kill. My grandmother used to get so upset when my uncle would get killed playing these gangster roles in movies.

Was it because of the The N. Korean Thread??? Thanks Trashie.
