Don't drop the soap, Ahab.

It's my job to be an asshole. Somebody has to be Out for Justice. I guess I've been a little testy, huh? I've been dealing with someone who was Hard to Kill. Okay kevbone- I like you a little. But don't expect no love. You'll have to go fishing with BrownNose for that.

I wasn't talking to you, shit for brains. But then, I suppose it still applies to you.

Exactly. Which is precisely what makes me call BS on the Iraq war and the war on terror- at least, as far as Bush being it's leader. Every day we are sternly reminded that "THIS NATION IS AT WAR!" But what has Bush and the government asked his countrymen and women to contribute to this effort? Anything at all? Go shopping? Go about your business? Support me and my policies and go back to work, don't worry, big government daddy will handle this for all of you? How are we as a nation supposed to take this "war" seriously, feel involved, feel its reality, when the government's primary concern is that everyone's standard of living remains unaffected and no one has to partipate apart from the soldiers who already volunteered? If at the outset Bush: raised taxes, instituted the draft, rationed gasoline, commandeered manufacturing industry, or AT LEAST: informed citizens that the survival of the country was at stake, AND THAT, as citizens, we were all OBLIGED to contribute in some way to the effort...asked for our help...we may not have liked it entirely but we would surely have had some tangible sense of the gravity and seriousness of the war. Instead, his actions make me think through all the talk talk talk, warning, warning, warnings about terror and enemies- he's absolutely NOT SERIOUS about this. His further bungling of both Iraq and Afghanistan by not sending enough troops and fighting the war from the strategy of "we're only trying to hit the bad guys so we don't make anyone mad" has resulted in neither Shock nor Awe- it makes us look spineless and also look like we're just there with enough troops to secure the oil fields and embroil ourselves in a perpetual war with which they can continue to manipulate the emotions of the American people back home indefinitely. If your going to fight a war, then FIGHT A FUCKING WAR. Don't pretend it's something else, and don't ask the country for nothing apart from complicity.

Yeah, I bet when you run out of lube everyone gets pretty grouchy.

To some extent, we elect leaders on their values, but at the end of the day, the government is supposed to execute the will of the people. Bush has made it clear that the latter matters not- US policy is entirely about HIM, and his own values, his own personal agenda. He has a dangerously inflated self-importance that doesn't fit with a supposed democracy. Not "reported popular" suggests that all the people are actually behind him and that it's just a biased media reporting otherwise. However, the "apathy", or whatever you wish to call it discussed above- fence sitting, if you prefer- of a majority of the population that prevents people from any activism such as protests, suggests there's a "silent majority" in the US which strongly disapproves of Bush's tactics but is choosing to remain civil and quiet. The propaganda machine of the far right has unfortunately scared most true conservatives (read: NOT Bush) into thinking that there's no alternative but to support the president- this dividing the nation and issues into black and white simple-isms. Either you are for Bush, or you want taxes to skyrocket and you want to help terrorists. Support for anyone other than Bush means you want gay marriage, abortion, etc. Right now, true conservatives actually are the group who can change this in a minute- they just need to recognize they've been duped. And the nation as a whole would do well to examine it's blind worship of authority and be done with it. No one is Above the Law.

Effectively protest US torture policies by: - Put on black clothes, run amok in downtown Seattle throwing bricks through Starbucks' windows. - Utilize any chant beginning with "Hey Hey, Ho Ho.." - Conjoin the protest with one for the oppressed transgender community - Block the freeway and anger people so badly they don't even pay attention much less care what the issue your protesting is concerning.

Is Fairweather around to comment on this?

I'll bet Off White doesn't go down to the docks and pull cocks out of your mouth and tell you how to do your job, sailor boy. So are you only able to post in the Butt Pirate forum now? I guess I'd be bitter too. Didn't I kick your ass last time I was up in Alaska?

Hastert's statement also seems to suggest that anyone arrested is already guilty (i.e., a 'terrorist')(i.e i.e. 'this only applies to the bad guys', which assumes the authorities are infallible). The concern here is that innocent people will be arrested and tortured in the course of finding out that they aren't actually terrorists. Then, maybe, continued to be imprisoned just in case. I think most supporters of this bill are just incredulously saying "that could never happen here...this is America". With the hysteria of the modern age, I wouldn't be so sure of that.

No but I heard kevbone plays the skin flute.

We're talking about the GOVERNMENT using the airwaves to sell it's agenda. In fact, the privately owned channels are free to provide whatever sort of propaganda and opinions they like, and it should stay that way. But if the government is hijacking the airwaves through whatever means to influence public opinion, that I think is fairly obviously quite a different story, don't you? The line is getting blurred now because many of the public channels are owned by individuals or groups heavily influenced by lobbyists and political heavies. As for Murrow's words, indeed, this comes down to individuals with a conscience making brave decisions to be impartial and factual in reporting the news- even at the risk of offending those who find the truth incompatible with their political or financial goals.

Wait a sec. So if the left does it, it makes the right doing it fair game? Or are they both wrong? You can't excuse the right from it by using that excuse. As for the media thing: politics aside, is it, or is it not, acceptable for the government to use public airwaves to deseminate propaganda? Isn't the supposed "left wing media" been a major complaint of the right for many years? Regardless of who is using the airwaves for propaganda- should this be legal or not? If not, is it a prosecutable offense? If so, why is this "suppression of free speech"? There are infinite channels for that, this is simply a check on government power- isn't that what conservatives want?

Exactly. To anyone climbing Outer Space this weekend: you have until 2 PM to reach the top of the wall. I'll be there with a watch. Anybody coming over the top at 2:00:01 or later will be clotheslined right back to the base. I don't care how late you started. Hyperspace climbers have until 4 PM, after which time toppers-out will be subjected to the "hyperextended arm" maneauver. Orbit climbers...you get a pass, since you were all smart enough to go over there to avoid the crowds. Unless it's after 4, then you'll understand what it's like to go into Orbit. And all of you best watch out for flying goats. Sooner or later I'm going to have to take a whizz, and as soon as that furry white bastard comes near me while my fly is unzipped, he's gonna get launched off the wall. You've all been warned. Climb safe. Climb fast. Or DIE.
