  1. Trip: Silver Star - that one route Date: 5/11/2008 Trip Report: Since I had to be back in Seattle by 8 pm, we left scenic Lynnwood at 4 am for the 3 hour drive up to Silver Star Creek, 7.5 miles past the Early Winter Spires. Rainer Bergendorf's book lists this as an overnighter with 8 miles in and 10 hours to complete. Following the route of a couple telemarkers that we caught up with on their way down. They went up the middle gully and descended the right one (skier's left). We ran into a soloist who was taking a break before we starting up the middle gully. Looking down it. Four hours into it, we stopped 1300 feet below the summit, not wanting to ski down ice up higher. From the point of our descent, the snow varied from iced over corn to patches of powder until the timberline where it was "cascade concrete". The line is behind me in this photo. As expected, skiing the trail back to the parking lot proved to be exciting as we avoided trees (sometimes) or falling into Silver Star creek. Gear Notes: Ski crampons, ax. Brought harnesses & rope (not used). Shovel/ probe/ beacon are always mandatory. Approach Notes: skinned all the way up from the road cut out. The general store in Newhalem is closed, horrible coffee in Marblemount & Darrington.
  2. riiiiight, Let's come back to this thread 5 or 10 years later and see the results.
  3. That's coo I'm suprised at how much growth Dayton has had as a town. At any rate, fish on! Alpental is reopening Sat. Sunday I will be pulling one of you bastards off my Mom.
  4. JZR- It licenses as a motorcycle because it has 3 wheels and the engine of a 500cc Honda.
  5. Hilary has offered to take Obama as her VP, but Obama having Hilary as a VP would be a liability. We would see a McCain /Clinton ticket before Obama / Clinton.
  6. Amar, Thanks for sharing here at cc.com as well. Read this on TAY yesterday and was enthralled. At the risk of sounding redundant, way to maintain your composure and not have the fear overtake your decision making process. Some people, myself included, would be embarassed to share this experience in the detail you have, but the readers can learn from it. I know you and Hannah did! Ditto on Sirwoofalot's gesture. You can get a free drink from me anytime.
  7. There is no such thing as a stupid question.... The local grocery store that is listed in the Frenchman's guidebook doesn't carry the permits/ passes anymore. I had to go to True Value in Quincey a couple years ago. Last year, just bought the fishing parking pass at Joes (formerly GI Joes) before i headed out there. Although I have never seen anyone get a ticket.
  8. roped on the Spearhead? umm, yeah The quote was from the article, not me. I don't believe there are hard fast rules that say you should be roped up, just because you are on a glacier. Or that traveling roped up would hinder your movement so much that it is not essential.
  9. Yeah it took long enough, 8 years. Thanks to a senator in Oklahoma, who lost his seat in the last election.
  10. Even McGovern (former Clinton, now Obama supporter) has publicly asked her to withdraw. But they are moving on to West Virginia. Wahoo! West Virginia!
  11. "It's nice to do a good-ending story. It's prime time to go ski touring, but the people who are doing it need to know the basic rules. The basic mountaineering rule is that whenever you are on a glacier, you should be roped together."
  12. Yeah Underworld, in your same article. "However, the Myanmar military, which regularly accuses the United States of trying to subvert its rule, was unlikely to accept U.S. military presence in its territory. "
  13. BD Rage has a simmilar design as the Alp wing, but heavier. Like the Alp wing, it has been discontinued. Aztars are a good bet.
  14. True, it is an unfortunate event for these people. The death toll is alarming and compassionate people or countries could offer assistance. Except we won't for political reasons and Myanmar's gross offenses against human rights. We have an embargo in place against them. http://www.state.gov/r/pa/ei/bgn/35910.htm
  15. I would be curious to see how much "protection" they offer federal whistle blowers. Does this office "take care" the people who dish out the goverment's dirty laundry? Or is it only Monica's or the Spitzer girls' laundry that we care about anymore?
  16. Speaking of ski stuff. I went in Friday and found the last Covert 32L Avalung retail $200, on sale for $100. A covert w/o the avalung is $110. Score! G3 skins are on sale. Close to 30% off.
  17. Sunday was the day to be up there for sure. Get up there soon before more snow melts on the trail or you will be dodging more than trees on the descent. Bad ass TR Skykilo!

I don't know, lets connect the dots and see what we get.
  19. Trip: Alpine Lakes - Colchuck Glaicer Date: 5/5/2008 Trip Report: On 5/4/08, my buddies & I intended on doing a short ski tour. Stopping at Stevens Pass, we weren't too enthused at the prospect of spending such a fine day on a minor objective so we opted for the Colchuck Glacier. Starting late at 10 am, we parked a mile or so below the trailhead due to snow, which tact on another 40 mins. We booted up the hard pack through the trail until reaching softer snow that permitted skinning. John packed his downhill set up and used hiking boots & snowshoes for the approach while Andrew & I rocked the AT setup. We ran into two snowshoers who turned around due to navigation difficulties before reaching Colchuck Lake. Upon reaching Colchuck Lake at 3 pm, we had a renewed vigor. The snow wasn't breakable crust but a light layer of corn instead. No one else was there, but a nice skin track. We set our turn around time at 5, not wanting to ski through the trees in the dark. About 1000 feet short of the col, we descended. A fantastic run in ideal spring conditions, I thought the best was over, but the real challenge was skiing through the trees back to the trail head. Hard pack, rocks, trees, and sharp turns with high banks from previous traffic made it a delightful second run. We made it back to the car at 9 without using our headlamps which is a successful day trip in my book. Gear Notes: Skis or snowshoes, the recent warm weather has made this post hole central. Approach Notes: The Mountaineers creek road is drivable, except for the last mile or so, a bit before the bridge.
  20. When I am not on terrain that requires poles, I hold it upside down and pretend it's a lightsabre.
  21. Amar posted a TR on TAY, http://www.turns-all-year.com/skiing_snowboarding/trip_reports/index.php?topic=9953.0
  22. True, the guys car was parked where the snow blocked the road, 4 miles up the 8 miles to the TH. I checked the road conditions on my way back from Shuksan.
  23. I have had a piar for a couple years as my main go to shoe and haven't had a problem.
