  1. THAT is hilarious. My reasons for not using a bladder: 1) you never know how much is left until its gone; 2) once you refill them, good luck getting them back in your full pack after all your other gear has settled into it's place; 3) the mouthpiece can freeze; 4) they're a pain to clean (if you remember to); 5) ever pull the the tube from the bottom of the bladder? You panic and thrash around trying to stop the deluge into your pack just as it completely empties all over your clothes. That's fun.
  2. I'll say! Looks like a great trip Sky.

    COOK

    This definitely belongs here.
  4. Everyone knows what that means. It means "Y"ES, we are HERE.

    Gear for Muir?

Don't underestimate the power of young women.

  7. At least he died smiling!
  8. When we got to the slope before the summit a couple of us put them on. I didn't think they were necessary. Good point. The buzz-to-weight ratio is much better too!
  9. Here's my TR when I did it. I actually enjoyed it despite its reputation. Make sure you don't get too high before deciding on a bivy. There are 2 great spots. Don't pass the second one otherwise you'll wish you stayed lower because there's not much above it. I also recommend a good bottle of red for the trip.
  10. Here's to you Mike!
  11. Also, make sure with a smaller diameter rope too you size your prusiks closer to 5mm as opposed to 6mm or 7mm.

    new bike

A good friend of mine has an Axis. Excellent bike. He's thrashed the hell out of it racing, and it's still going strong. He has replaced the bottom bracket once, but I think it's because one cross race last season in particular, we were immersed in water for almost the whole race. Insane.
  13. Thanks jrmycarr. That makes sense. Especially after studying the pics more. We're giving it a shot tomorrow. Hopefully we'll have good luck.

    new bike

I have a Cannondale Cross Bike. Mine's two years old. I race cyclocross in the winter, but I slap road tires on it and it's great for commuting. At 22 lbs. it's heavy for road-racing, but it's been an awesome bike. It can take a beating.
  15. I have used mine to boil water on/near the summit of Hood, Adams, and Shasta. Performed perfectly each time.
  16. Nice work jrmycarr! What was your runout? Did you veer back toward CR or drop off near Castle Crags? I was hoping the pics (good job 111 btw) would show it.
  17. Same boot, same complaint. I thought I could look past the lack of ankle support, but I'm using Megarides now, and I think I was crazy thinking that the Verticals would suffice.
  18. Any book by Charles Bukowski.
  19. 2 lbs. of unchewed grapes.
  20. Yup, I know some of these guys. One of them is my son, Ben Elkind. I have to admit they made some errors, and at the same time they made some good moves. I'm pretty amazed at how quickly you guys on this forum act like pompous *sses (pardon my french). It's as if none of you guys have *ever* made a mistake in your lives ! And the comments you guys throw out on this forum end up splattered all over the 'net. See http://blog.oregonlive.com/breakingnews/2007/05/popular_online_climbing_forum.html So, here's the story: They had (mostly) the right gear, but they failed to load a topo map in their GPS (lesson #1), and they failed to store their waypoints (lesson #2), they overestimated the abilities of their climbing buddies (lesson #3, or maybe *risk* #1), and they should have turned back sooner (they would have avoided the bad weather) (lesson #4). They lost the trail to the summit, and retried a couple of times, and in the process over-stayed (GPS waypoints would have helped). On the way down they hit the storm. They knew where they were (GPS), but not where they needed to go. A phone call from PMR gave them a heading/coordinates, and they made it down. PMR offered them two options: go to Illumination Saddle and wait a couple of hours for the snow cat to arrive, or hunker down for the night in a snow cave. The climbing party correctly decided to hike down rather than risk the overnight stay or a couple of hours of exposure in bad weather waiting for a snow cat. As you might imagine, this was a "training" climb. Ben hit REI the next morning to buy a proper GPS, vowing that this lesson (waypoints and topo map saved in GPS are your friend) would not have to be re-learned. All in all, they could have done better, and they could have done much worse. And by the way, they also learned that Cingular cell phone works *much* better than Verizon on Mt. Hood. (i.e. if you only bring a Verizon cell phone on the climb, you haven't brought a cell phone at all). - Bob Elkind (Ben's dad) Thanks for posting Bob. Don't take it personally and I'm glad Ben, and everyone else is ok. I (as well as others) am still just sensitive from the December deal and then the subsequent Velvet-saga. Welcome to CC.
  21. I kind of like the way she started. Despite my lapse on Friday, I'm down a solid 4 lbs. since last Monday.
  22. How about just cold ripe fruit in general? That is the shit. Like a thick plantain and two large juicy plums.
  23. Calories in, calories out. It's no more complicated than that. Everything that you say to avoid here you can eat as long as you burn more than you take in at the end of the day. Simple. I don't think anyone here that is "participating" in this contest really believes there is some magical plan out there that helps you lose weight. We're either trying to burn more than we take in, or eat less than we burn. The rest of this banter is just clean supportive fun.
  24. "Thank you for allow me to post!" Where is Harry Pi these days??
  25. I immediately got cranky when this came on the news. Calling for a rescue because of a whiteout? Unexpected storm? Had a GPS and couldn't figure out how to use it? Unbelievable. Anyone know these guys?: Brian Anderson, 24, Portland Ben Elkind, 22, Portland Bryce Benge, 29, Lake Oswego Jeremiah West, 28, Portland Brian Weihs, 39, Hillsboro
