  1. Boulder is like a small Portland... but Boulder has real mountains and good climbing. Stay inside the Boulder Bubble and you'll be ok. Go Buffs.
  2. Last I heard, yes... the guide's out of print. And WTF is the deal with the big Smith guide? It's ten years old, at least.
  3. It was a real rescue. My wife and I walked up just as they were bringing the victim down. Apparently a woman popped off Monkey Face on the slab just below the first bolt and decked. She injured her ankle. She was concious and talking when she passed us. Hope she's OK... Maybe stick-clips aren't such a bad idea after all...
  4. I may be able to help with video editing. We do a little bit of that where I work. PM me...
  5. Hi everyone! I know I'm going to get flamed for this post... but I gotta do this: I need help. As some of you know, I'm a television reporter for KATU TV in Portland. I'm also a climber. Now my boss has decided that, since I can do both, I should climb Mount Hood and do a live broadcast from the summit sometime this summer. Doing so involves hauling some gear to the summit. I'm looking for two experienced climbers to help out. The climb may also involve some video work... unless I can find a photographer on staff at KATU experienced enough to do it (not likely.) The climb would be on a weekday, dog route, with the goal of being on top by 7am. PM me if you're interested. Or you can email me at bbarker@katu.com. We can swap resumes and see if you're interested.
  6. American Alpine Club criticizes fee-for-rescue laws as misguided DENVER (AP) - Three climbers already were dead on Oregon's Mount Hood in 2002 when a helicopter coming for survivors crashed and tumbled a thousand feet down a steep snowfield. The accident seemed to symbolize the costs and risks of alpine search and rescue. But a new study by the American Alpine Club says such dramatic and dangerous operations are the exception, and argues that state laws allowing climbers to be billed for their own rescues are misguided. The report will be released Thursday and was provided to The Associated Press. It says American mountaineering deaths and injuries are declining, even though the number of climbers is increasing. Hikers, hunters, boaters and swimmers all require more rescues than climbers. --- On the Net: American Alpine Club: http://www.americanalpineclub.org (Copyright 2005 by The Associated Press. 7. OMFG. This is precisely why the gene pool must be thinned no more. Kinda makes Richard Gere look docile...
  8. TV MAKES YOU FAT.
  9. The AP is calling the women "climbers." Hmmmm. AP-WA--Pilchuck Rescue (Tops) Missing women found GRANITE FALLS, Wash. (AP) - Two missing climbers have been found on Mount Pilchuck. Snohomish County sheriff's Deputy David Hayes says they are in good condition. Rescuers are bringing the women down to a logging road where a vehicle can bring them the rest of the way out. They spent two cold nights on the mountain. The women -- 23 and 32 years old -- are from the Seattle area and work together at an Everett restaurant. They went for a day hike Sunday on the mountain near Granite Falls and lost the trail on the way down. They called Sunday night by cell phone to report they were lost. They called again yesterday morning to say they were O-K, then the cell phone died. About four dozen searchers and deputies had been taking part in the search.
  10. Got it. Hells Canyon sucks. See you there.
  11. Dude, Spring Mountain is awesome. We checked it out this weekend. Thanks, all, for the beta. Great little area. The ratings seemed a little stiff... anyone else notice that? Also - heard a rumor about 500 routes at Hell's Canyon. Is this true?
  12. Sweet. We're headed out there this weekend for the first time. We plan to camp. Any suggestions nearby?
  13. Goddddddammmmittttt!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so sick of this. The media is only as liberal as the conservative companies that own them. Every reporter gets their talking points from the big black building in New York where "The Media" is headquartered. It comes in the daily memo. They're all told exactly what to say and how to slant their stories. Don't you see? It's a giant conspiracy. The memo from "The Media" exists so they're all on the same page. They're all the same. Group them together. Brilliant.
  14. What's that white shit all over the mountains?
  15. shit. nothing ever happens in portland.
  16. dumbass
  17. Your hotel should store it for you. Also, try the Vagamundo... they know lots of people for hookups like that. It's downtown ont he Plaza de Armas...
  18. Couloir: Still humping. I'm getting chafed. Spent the night in freaking Packwood looking for ash. Hey, it pays by the hour, so I'm saving up for the next overseas climbing trip. Oh well... it sure looked cool!!!! Guess this means we won't be skinning up St Helens any time soon, huh?
  19. This is ghetto: ASPEN - An investigation is under way in Pitkin County following the avalanche death of a man outside the boundaries of the Aspen Highlands ski area. The man died Sunday during an avalanche awareness class after he was trapped by a snowslide. Other information about the man hasn't been released. Ann Stephenson of the Pitkin County sheriff's office says the man was in a group of six people who were part of a class sponsored by the backcountry expedition company Aspen Expeditions. It's not clear what triggered the avalanche. Early estimates indicate the avalanche slid 3,000 vertical feet and was about 100 to 200 yards wide. The slide apparently began above the treeline, or above 12,000 feet, in the Five Fingers Bowl. Stephenson says the man was alive when he was pulled from the slide, but died within a half hour. The man was pulled from the snow by people in the party who tried to stabilize him. Avalanche danger for that elevation was rated moderate Sunday. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center says at least 46 people have been caught in snowslides this season. The only other reported avalanche death this season occurred in January, when a backcountry skier from Steamboat Springs was buried under three feet of snow in an avalanche on Buffalo Pass.
  20. Hey Atomicboy!!! You got a government credit card? I'll come visit and we can supplement our racks over at Mountains and Rivers...
  21. Dude, I lived in New Mexico for two years and climbed all over the place. I just moved to Oregon and I really miss the climbing. It's a lot better there! First of all, let me say that I lived in Albuquerque and I hated it. There's tons of crime, it's dirty, hot and poor. BUT - the climbing is great. The Sandia Mountains jut 6,000 feet above town, sitting literally at Albuquerque's city limits. There are huge rock buttresses in the Sandia that guard the summit, punctuated by massive cracks and incredible lines. It's chossy as hell, but great adventure climbing. Beneath the Sandias is a decent little bouldering area in a city park. If you're willing to drive, you'll find unlimited climbing opportunities. And most of the climbing areas are deserted. Palomas Peak offers great limestone routes just north of the Sandias. North of Santa Fe, an area called White Rock boasts hundreds of really fun crack routes. There's also Datil, about two hours Southwest of Albuquerque. That's another killer area where you can camp at the base and climb on some really fun sedimentary rock. And, don't forget Hueco Tanks!!! It's just five hours away in El Paso and totally worth the drive. That's just a few of lots of places to climb in New Mexico. The food's great, the weather's not bad, and the climbing community is pretty cool. Just don't move there. PM me if you need more beta.
  22. yeah, WTF?
  23. Anyone else up high when that storm hit the summit 'round 3pm? Nasty.

    RIP Duke

"The TV business is uglier than most things. It is normally perceived as some kind of cruel and shallow money trench through the heart of the journalism industry, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs, for no good reason." RIP
