    El Nino?

Is this good or bad for the winter here? I forget. http://www.cpc.ncep.noaa.gov/products/analysis_monitoring/enso_advisory/index.html EL NIÑO/SOUTHERN OSCILLATION (ENSO) DIAGNOSTIC DISCUSSION issued by CLIMATE PREDICTION CENTER/NCEP August 5, 2004 Synopsis: El Niño conditions are expected to develop during the next 3 months. Sea surface temperature anomalies increased substantially in the central equatorial Pacific (Niño 3.4 region, Fig. 1) during July 2004, while anomalies greater than +0.5°C persisted in the Niño 4 region. The recent increase and eastward expansion of positive SST anomalies in the central equatorial Pacific indicate the possible early stages of a warm episode. SST anomalies greater than +0.5°C (~1°F) were found between 160°E and 120°W, with anomalies greater than +1°C extending from 180°W eastward to 125°W (Fig. 2). In spite of the anomalous warmth in the central equatorial Pacific during July, there appears to be little or no reflection of that warmth in the pattern of deep convection (precipitation) over the region (Fig. 3). - a s s m n k e y

  5. you have a big mouth? Really? Yeah, remember when gotterdamerung said he was like the Darth Vader of cc.com? Yeah, well I want to be known as the ALF of cc.com.
  6. No dude, those guys are moderates. If Kucinich was the DNC approved candidate, MAYBE you could say that. But not those guys. Chomsky, the old Nader (before he took right-wing money), Parenti, those guys are far left liberals. That's like saying Clinton was far-left. They're all moderates. And that is what is frustrating about being a progressive minded citizen in this country. We really don't have any representation in the national political scene. - a s s m n k e y
  7. ...Or some church official. But, yeah, in general, I agree. Wouldn't the point be to create a society in which everyone is free from the burdens created by others? Whether it be moral codes (abortion, racism), crappy air (from SUVs or cigarettes or giant smokestacks), or pranks (yelling fire in a theatre)? We all just want to be free. Free to ride our machines (or climb or ski or just live) without being hassled by the Man (or the results of His machines or shitty economic policy or draft or overburdened by taxes that get spent on policies that don't improve the quality of my life). And we want to GET LOADED! - m u d m n k e y Ban for the Greater Good.

  10. "Yea, and Moses led the children of Israel through the desert, and they found in their path a big fucking brontasaurus. "And the children of Israel said to Moses, 'We're outta here.' "And Moses said, 'Fear not, for the Lord sayeth continue on this path.' "And Moses looked closer, and saw that the brontasaurus had a thorn in its paw. And Moses removed the thorn from the paw of the mighty beast. And the brontasaurus left the path, and the children of Israel continued on toward the promised land. "And the children of Israel said to Moses, 'Yeah, but that was some scary shit.'" You asshole! You just make me laugh out loud and spit a mouthful of coffee all over my monitor and keyboard! Asshole! - monkey

  12. You know what, you guys are right. Listen...this is the sound of assmonkey backpedaling. There are dogmatic folks at both ends of the spectrum. I think in my experience--because I am left-leaning and I have a big mouth--I tend to bump heads with the dogmatic folks on the right end of the spectrum. :grouphug: - a s s m n k e y
  13. Recently I came into possession of a road bike. Last night some friends took me on a ride around Mercer Island. Going clockwise, we hammered through some turns on the East side of the island, and it was fucking brilliant. The turns in that section are sweet: banked, tight, fast. I felt like I was a little kid again while jamming through there. I highly recommend the ride. My question for you: Where around Seattle are the other good road rides? Here's some criteria for what I would consider a "good road ride" feel free to disregard or modify (I'm new at road riding, so I'm still trying to learn what's up): - low traffic - start within 10 miles of downtown - turns-tight, banked and fast - hills-nice combo of up/down - loop route (I like loops) - a s s m n k e y
  14. Is that why you are so nasty to people? No offense intended to anyone on this board, but the most virulently close-minded people I have met in my life have been religious and right-wing. Which, I guess, is the dictionary definition of conservative: "Favoring traditional views and values; tending to oppose change." Which is a bit unrealistic in my opinion. If there is anything constant it is that change will occur, and the better equipped you are to deal with it (i.e., being open-minded) the easier it will be to deal with the situation. This is reinforced to me just about every single excursion I make into the outdoors, and especially when climbing. - a s s m n k e y

  19. Chomsky had some strong words for Nader recently as well, so you're probably fine as far as keeping your "liberal greener" status. I'll post the words if I can find them. - M
  20. True enough. The military is just as political (maybe moreso) than any large organization. The brass submit the awards: You have to be on the brass' radar to even get your name submitted. So, then, Kerry is guilty of being a brownnoser? - a s s m n k e y
  21. Kerry signed up for multiple tours in 'Nam. More balls than I have. The critics should STFU. It's disrespectful, it's a smear campaign, and it's hurting the Bush-Cheney campaign more than it's helping. The 'Pubs are fucking this campaign up and I am watching with glee. THREE MORE MONTHS! Identity Theft

You work hard for your money. Keep the criminals (private and corporate) from stealing it from you. "10 tips to prevent identity theft" http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/Banking/FinancialPrivacy/P41275.asp And this interesting article that everyone should read, "Your checkbook just became obsolete:" http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/Banking/Betterbanking/P90617.asp Preamble: "Your bank is about to make some pretty radical changes to your checking account -- changes that could cost you money in bounced-check fees and limit your ability to fight fraud or errors. These alterations are so significant, in fact, that it may be time to abandon paper checks, if you haven’t already. So far, though, few banks have signaled to their customers what’s coming. Loopholes in the law mean many customers may never receive formal notification of the revolution. It’s all part of a sweeping modernization law known as Check 21, passed last year by Congress and signed into law by President Bush. In a nutshell, the law frees banks from having to handle paper and instead allows them to process electronic images of your original checks. " - a s s m n k e y
