Thanks.... Ian... when you say "rusts out crampons/axes", what kind of time frame are you talking about? Over the long term if you get off the route and don't go home and scrub 'em or are you indicating damage can be done just in the time it takes to climb and get back home???!!!

Anybody climb Oregon High 1F? If the route is super straight forward, cool. If there is a particular, crux/route finding challenge, I'd be interested in a pic or advise. Flame if you want, but could do without the requisite, "go up, don't fall" variety advise. Cluck

Seems reasonable to me that if one is interested in pursuing such precisely defined records, then one should stick to the strict definition of the words. If JCL wants to be recognized for a "winter ascent" then it's up to him to ensure he climbs within the appropriate dates. Otherwise, it's just an ascent (albeit an impressive one).

Well, thanks everyone for all the great suggestions. I especially liked "Shithead" - that movie's great. There were some really good ideas that almost hit the mark but in the end, only one really felt right. So ladies & gentlemen (and I use the terms loosly), let me introduce you all to Sahale: If you see us on the trail, don't hesitate to stop and say hello! Later...

... Yeah - obscure is good. Sort of like an inside joke. I want to avoid the overused stuff like "Shasta" and "Denali." "Come here, Sandy Glacier Headwall. Good girl!"

Just got this little bundle of fur but can't decide on a name for her: I want to go with something like a mountain, route, or glacier from the PNW. So far my favorites are Sahale, Tahoma, and Luna. Any other ideas?

"Mother Jugs & Speed" - a cheezy comedy flick in the '70s and also describes my climbing style

I admire your efforts to find the rightful owner, but a $15 piece of equipment should qualify as booty. Add it to your collection and use it proudly.

Where is "in town" - Seattle? Portland? or somewhere in between?

Well... it's no yeti smashing penguins, but I guess it's not a bad way to waste time.

Local TV and paper in PDX try too hard to attach an Oregon connection to everything.... "Washington DC sniper once visited Oregon" The two biggest news stories in Oregon since I've lived here (6+ years) have been Keiko the whale and the boat that wrecked on the coast. Not exactly hard news.

1180.2 (played for about an hour Friday when I was supposed to be working)

Damn, that's great! Nothin like smashing penguin heads with a giant club to chase away those wintertime blues.

4 days in March might yeild a reasonable weather window, however it is quite likely that it won't. As per everyone's suggestions, it can't help to have a back up plan... even if that plan only includes skiing, beer drinking or other non climbing activities. 4 days couped up in a cheap motel in crappy weather doesn't sound like much fun.

Damn that's funny shit. Thanks Pandora!

From a poster called Stiffler in another thread. "Yeah, the Apocalypse needles are located out by the Dalles. If you're on 84 E, and you drive out that way, go about 6 miles past the Dalles. look up on your right, and you'll see detatched columns leaning out about midway down the hill. They blend in with the columns behind them. I've climbed 2 of them, one I would call 5.5 pg, and the other one 5.7x. It is definitely adventurous. I'd post a couple pics if I knew how..let me know if you want more info.." If you hit 'em... how about a TR and some pics so the other choss chasers get some beta. If I hit 'em, I'll do the same

I hope no one takes offense to my posting this picture, but I think it's simply amazing. This is the helmet of the guy that survived the fall today. Obviously, the helmet is thrashed, but the dude's noggin is in pretty good shape because of it.

Glad you made it back vw... I thought for sure it was you we were going after. Sad that Kenny didn't make it, my condolences to the family. On the brighter side, I'm extremely proud of the way the community pulls together when climbers are in trouble. The media, Sheriff, National Guard, mountain rescue teams, Timberline Lodge... hell, even the road construction crews waved us by the backed up traffic on 26 so we could get to the mountain quicker. It's great to have so much support from the community.

Pucci was the only lift open last weekend and coverage on the runs was suprisingly decent. Stay on the runs, though - the off trail stuff will rip yer skis up.
-
I'd say go for it. I was up there last weekend and the coverage was suprisingly good on the groomed stuff. The freezing level has been low enough this week that any precip would have been snow for them. They were only running one chair + the bunny hill though, so they weren't charging full price. We paid $32 a ticket. With the new snow, they may open more chairs and may raise the ticket price. Lastly - call their snow phone first to make sure they're open. They have a habit of deciding at the last minute not to open and it would suck to get up there to find the place shut down. It won't be the best skiing of the year, but will definitly scratch the itch!

Certainly not super secret or even that interesting, but a couple of us cruised the standard route on 3FJ on 10/15. Nice Sunny day for the 3 of us and the hunters. Got rained out of Smith on Sunday 10/16. It looked like it snowed down to about 5K or so the night before, so anyone still thinking about Cascades choss can count on some white stuff on the routes now.

stiffler.... Apocalypse Needles? Not famililar. Any beta you want to post or PM? Thanks... CLUCK

Cool - just a couple of days and the new lava dome is already as tall as the old one! It will be interesting to look down into the crater and see what's changed.

Youch! Easy SnowByrd - I wasn't attacking you personally (OK, maybe I took a little jab ) but mostly I was arguing with the folks encouraging you to make up a story. Writing a letter asking for leniency is one thing, but IMHO lying to try and get off the hook ain't cool. Either way, I agree that $411 is an enormous ticket and that totally sux.

I remember that. You could drive at whatever speed you liked as long as it was "reasonable and prudent." However, the general rule there was that anything over about 85 mph was not reasonable. OK - I'll stop dogpiling now...
