For the big cold spell this weekend, I will be shuttling the throngs of Ice Climberz up to the falls on my super plush FiveFitty two seater. Round-trip shuttle fare includes a sausage on a stick cooked on my muffler, a Miller Tall Boy, and a keepsake photo of you sending a sick line up the falls. Me yelling beta for your next move is additional $, but can be arranged. For pricing, reservations, and availability, please send me a PT.

The Bend Living film crew was supposed to meet me at Dutchman so I could give them a full blow-by-blow beta tour of the Brokentop basin. Sadly though, they got caught up at a business breakfast out at Pronghorn.

Being a firm believer in the 'if you don't go you don't know' school of thought, I ignored the 32 degree temps at 6k feet and decided to go see what things were looking like up high. At the dutchman flat parking lot, the trees were raining and the snow was getting super sloppy. Yet, I still strapped the ski's on the caddy and cruised up to Ball Butte. I couldn't make it past Moon Mtn meadows because no other crazy slednekkers had put in a track yet, and I'm just not mantastic enough to do so when solo. Anyhow, just below Moon Mtn just about 7k' the snow is super super suck. The pow from days past has turned into super slushee mix. I never got a glimpse of brokentop due to rainy fog, but I imagine some naturual sluffage is/has gone off up there. Anyhow, thats the sloppy condition reports from central oregon. Manimal- Since you haven't really skied before, I'd say your best bet would be to rent some AT gear and go check it out before you drop the coin on a setup. Like all skiing gear, AT gear is pretty spendy, so whenever you can try before you buy, you'll be best off. As for specific gear types/brands, it depends on what type of skiing you want to do. Many people like AlpineK are fans of Dynafit bindings due to their lightness, and others like myself are fans of heavier binders like Fritcschi Freerides. Each have a time and place and have pro's and cons. So go find a shop that has gear you can demo, try things out, and then start price shopping. Also if you can hold out till Spring, you will save big $ by buying gear on closeout.
