I got this recipe from a very old and falling apart Betty Crocker Cookie Cookbook my wife has had for ages. I modified it like a mad scientist, but the results were fantastic.
1/2 cup shortening (replaced 1/4 cup with Olive Oil)
2 squares (1oz each) of unsweetened chocolate
1 cup sugar (replace with brown sugar)
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup applesauce (home made from freezer)
2 eggs
1 tsp vanilla (didn't have, so left out)
1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1/2 cup chopped nuts (used walnuts)
(Added 1/2 tsp powdered cinnamon)
(Added 1/2 cup raisins)
(Added 1 pkg of Maple Brown Sugar Quaker Instant Oatmeal)
Heat oven to 350 F. Heat oil and shortening in a large sauce pan on low heat. Add chocolate and stir until dissolved. Turn off heat and add remaining ingredients. Stir to mix. Spread in a greased and floured baking pan, 9x9x2 in. Bake until top springs back when touched, 35-40 min. (used glass dish and 40 min). Cut into 16 bars while still warm.
Eat while still warm. Enjoy.
