I watched Great Trails of Washington with Steve Raible(sp?) last night at 10 pm. One of the places they went was Cascade Pass. They had a shot of a woman smoking a cigarette and admiring the view.

I saw a commercial the other day that featured some pretty boy who was supposed to be a climber, but when they showed him "climbing", I almost fell over laughing.

I've rappelled from "really hard snow" before on several occasions. We didn't have ice screws. All we had were ice axes and 1" double length slings. By pounding the spike repeatedly into the edge of a moat, a hole was bored through which the sling was passed. I was glad to have the wide material for this. Last year I couldn't sleep a wink in Muir Hut, so finally at 2 am I took a Diamox and was sound asleep within 10 minutes.

The swelling can be from two sources: broken capillaries or from a lack of return flow through the viens. If the former is the case, elevate and ice and use leaches if you have them. If the latter it is a result of a clot. No one can diagnose over the internet. Again, go see the doc. Aspirin is better than Ibu for clots, but if the cause is leaking capillaries then that's not what you want. Moderate icing will not hurt regardless of what the problem is.

You just might want to have a doctor look at that. Could be a blood clot. It doesn't sound right. Better ask Norman_Clyde.
