    chat... how?

The following URL doesn't work anymore. http://www.cascadeclimbers.com/threadz/jchat.php
  3. That is very interesting! So I assume that the fractures spread at right angles to the direction of pull. If the screws are aligned horizontally, the fractures spread from one screw to the other. Can you remember where you saw the testing results published?
  4. Nice photos. They tell the story and catch some good moves.
  5. This would be true if you used the rope to equalize as Jason describes. If you used a cordellette, it wouldn't matter.
  6. I wondered when someone would bring this up but I wouldn't have guessed where. What we are seeing right now is a direct effect of the Bush Administration. The Republicans made it known to the FDA that not enough new drugs were being approved and that the FDA was overly concerned with safety. Vioxx was the first of the COX-2 inhibitors to be submitted for approval. The safety problems have been known for a long time. My understanding was that since COX-2 inhibitors have fewer gastric side effects than older NSAIDs, they were considered a step forward in safety. Since sales of the drug have been very good, the company has been against taking it off the market even as the evidence built over time. The company no doubt has other safer molecules in their pipeline to replace it, but didn't want to spend the 100+million dollars to get it on approved.
  7. Eric Simonsen lead an expedition this year which wasn't publicized beforehand. Unfortunately, the weather didn't cooperate and they were not able to search the entire area they had planned. Asked whether he would go back next year, he said that he didn't know and he wouldn't tell anyone if he did.
  8. My understanding is that if you put all of the proceeds from sale of a house into a home of equal or greater value within six months, you will not be taxed on those proceeds. If on the other hand, you sell and decide to house of lesser value you will pay tax on the difference in value. If you decide to rent for more than six months then you must pay tax on the full amount of the sale. You've never owned a home, have you?
  9. He should learn how to use quotes.
  10. I for one would lose out under this plan. Why is interest income inherently more virtuous then wage income?
  11. Property taxes are a tax on WEALTH, not income. You don't want income taxed either. You don't want to pay any taxes.
  12. If you say it smells all right, be prepared to eat it.
  13. If you had that much cow dung you'd try hard to come up with a use for it too!
  14. Exactly.
  15. So are you looking forward to caring for your parents? Are you looking forward to someday moving in with YOUR children, assuming you have any? It may be true that this is common in other countries, but given a choice, it is not what most people would want.
  16. None of us has the foggiest notion of what this country was like before Social Security existed. But my father and my grandfather did and they told me about it. It was ugly. Old people out on farms starving to death when they could no longer work. Parents moving in with their children like beggars. Social security has allowed people to maintain their dignity in their old age. It was never intended as a "retirement account". It was meant to be a safety net.
  17. It has nothing to do with what you look like. Service writers know from experience that the vast majority of women don't question the work that is done. Next time, do this: Say, "I want you to do this job and nothing else. If you see something that really needs to be done, record it and I'll make an appointment to have it done next week. I want any and all parts you replace so I can examine them." Pick up your car and ask someone who knows cars to look at the system they say needs work. A lot of the time, it will not or the job can safely be deferred quite some time.
  18. I think that most short-sighted attempts to make political hay by playing to public sentiment of the moment end up as a wash over time.
  19. Your micro economic analysis is accurate, but your macro economic analysis is flawed. What do we mean by "destroy"? Use whatever term you like, but Walmart has altered the nature of the local economy and manufacturing in the US. It has changed the types of jobs that Americans hold. It has changed the distribution of wealth between individuals. There are winners and there most decidedly are losers.
  20. That is a very quaint notion you have of the independent "family farmers". Guess what, today most acreage is in the hands of large corporations. The largest subsidies, even on a per acre basis, go consistently to the largest corporations.
  21. People need to understand these are PARTY rules that apply only to party leadership. The Republicans can make whatever rules they like, but it is still hypocracy, because the original reason for the rules was to take a dig at the democrats who at the time were having troubles.
  22. I'll answer the question. The government hands out large sums of taxpayer money to big corporations such as Agri-business and defense contractors. That is "capitalism". If it gives out money to individuals, particularly the poor, that is "socialism"
  23. I think it is a dumb rule. Anybody can be indicted for any reason. They are innocent until proven guilty. What I disagree with is putting rules on and taking them off again to suit a particular situation.
  24. I think it is a dumb rule. Anybody can be indicted for any reason. They are innocent until proven guilty. What I disagree with is putting rules on and taking them off again to suit a particular partie's interests.
  25. Yes, he was disbarred for lying about a blow job. Your man Nixon was also disbarred for covering up a break in at the Watergate Hotel.
