  6. I think it was the rope-bearing biner on the draw that failed, rather than those attached to the pro?
  7. I don't know, it might. The meteor is supposed to destroy itself to absorb energy. At that pace, though, my guess is that it was obliterated w/o helping too much. Subjectively, I think a solid shell would help more. There's only so much you can expect of any helmet in this circumstance.
  8. I believe the Meteor was simply a compromise in safety by Petzl to get helmets on sport climbers and to get over the apparent dork-factor of the more appropriate head protection out there. Use of a polycarb. helmet should be a mark of advanced ability rather than the school marm image some may attribute to it. From erden's description though, nothing would have helped here. Impressive enough that he was wearing any helmet at a so-called sport crag, in my opinion. A very similar fatal head injury at Smith we responded to a few years ago highlighted the need for a helmet on even sport climbs at times. This is getting off track, however, as erden says, it would be difficult to see survival under any circumstances from that distance.
  9. As far as I know the Meteor IS a bike helmet. This was its intended use, sport climbing at the crags. I choose not to wear one more for the reason that if you are hit by one rock you're likely to be hit by two.

  12. Nice pics, thanks for the info. A friend showed me the terrain that was offered up there for skiing during downtime and it would be unfortunate to not take advantage. Twintips eh? I didn't know they put a half-pipe up there already.
  13. It would be a shame to sit around in camp for days and not have some good AT boots to crank with. You didn't find the Denalis awkward at all. Did you replace the liners or go with the stock ones?
  14. As tough as the experience is for you I hope you are able to start climbing again at some point. Many people I know either give up or take years to come back. I think that's unfortunate. Nice thing about WFR or EMT training is that even though you did not save a life, you know that you provided that individual with the best possible care they could have possibly hoped for and that even under the best of care, some are simply beyond hope in that environment. There is no question as to whether you did the right thing or not. Nice work.
  15. Well it looks like the top piece held just that the biner ripped open, which is odd, considering what looks to be a fairly low fall factor that far into the pitch and he was not really running it out, from what I can gather.
