did you realize you are not actually sitting in your chair right now but hovering above on a cushion of magnetism?

my other geek question for the day is how long can you hang out in the NMR room before the machine sucks the iron in your hemoglobin through your skin?

as far as I can tell, passenger trains moving over 5mph have been banned in the USA.
  9. The main risk is if you use any of the established bolts as your top rope anchor because they are liable to be chopped as you climb. But don't worry, they might be back again by the time you top out.

I seem to remember an experiment at the usno where they put an atomic clock on a plane and did a bunch of air travel, then compared it to a clock that remained at the observatory and there was a measurable shift. As you go faster, time slows to compensate for the constant speed of light. This is the explanation for that famous paradox of looking into a mirror while riding a train. Since light has a fixed speed, it can't go faster than the speed of light plus the speed of the train, so you shouldn't be able to see yourself in the mirror. So, something has to compensate, and that is time. Or something like that.

I think you'd die of unnatural causes long before that. bush is out of his skull proposing that right now. we could get so much more info out of mars for the same buck w/o wasting money trying to keep a sack of salt water alive out there.

Wonder who's going to step up as the person to go to Mars? Basically asking someone to commit suicide. Even with the robots the odds of surviving the landing are quite poor. Not to mention the enormous amount of time the individual would have to spend by themselves in space.

I breathed a sigh of relief as I stumbled into basecamp, a staggering 1000ft above msl. I almost retched at the condition of the area after years of expeditions, cow crap everywhere and chickens on the loose. I crawled into my 8000m bag inside the primitive barn-like shelter, praying I would not fall victim to mighty Klickitat's fury.

you can see the LA smog in the background, and I think that's MJ's nose in the rubble in the lower left.

Yeah it sounds a little sad but lay off guys. He's out there doing stuff, and AMS can kick in on anyone, at any time above 9k or so, no matter how fit or experienced you are. I have never had issues myself, but that's not to say I won't in the future. Even though he's not climbing hard stuff and his reports are pretty damn melodramatic at times it inspires me to get out there more often reading his stuff sometimes.
  20. only problem is in this area is you have to dig deep to find snow cycles because the events here are so epic!
  21. I believe it syncs up nicely with the disassembly of Michael Jackson's face. The 1998 photo clearly emulates the hideous nature of the post "Bad" era.
  22. I seem to remember a bathroom like this in college, resulting in the same waving of hands/jumping in the dark. I ended up throwing a toilet paper roll out the stall to trigger the lights and beat a hasty retreat.
  23. I predict mad cow foam will become a beauty product in the future. I am already collecting my stash to sell
  24. It probably would be bad but you only live once. If it was true frostbite I think your decision would already be made for you. If it starts to discolor in the future I would not risk it myself. Think how lame it would be to lose parts of your fingers. I was pretty scared when this happened to me since the numbness lasted for weeks.
