Still Darin, you've got to give them points for not altering the aid climbing experience for others on those routes, isn't that a change in the norm for El Cap free routes? I'd agree that Lama's proposed tactics aren't different, but the area is. Most folks accept that different areas have different rules. You're making some interesting and thoughtful arguments in this thread.

[video:youtube] and that's all I have to say about that.

that's okay, you're forgiven, right on topic even!

The entry bouldering moves were fun and elegant too, I really miss that route. Maybe we'll do the work the get the replacement route in service this year, though its unfortunately (for me anyway) several letter grades harder.

Make anti-vaccine parents pay higher med insurance premiums seems fair to me...

Sorry Horatio Noseblower, but the TrashTart is correct. I'm a rural dweller, and I'm thankful for all those city folk and the taxes they pay, since otherwise all my roads would be potholed gravel. Self reliance is a survivalist myth, a strong man and his gun is just meat on the hoof. Communities of people is the only thing that has survival value. There's plenty of that out in the rural areas, neighbors look out for each other, even when they don't especially love one another. Standing alone though? Hey, it didn't even work for the Omega Man. You are aware that Alaska is the biggest recipient of federal dollars, aren't you? The entire state sucks on the government teat like fat little piggy.

JayB, I don't see what your charming straw man has to do with anything. My response had nothing to do with cultural relativism or eco-chic posturing, it was rather more visceral. It's no secret that I'm an alum from Evergreen, and Willi Unsoeld was among my faculty. He was as much a philosophy professor as anything. So I just responded to Jim with the first thing that popped into my head.

Ahem. Ahem. For those not in the know, this is The Bolted Flake at the quarry in Tenino. This route is no longer there as the big flake Jibby is liebacking up fell off a couple years ago, landing right where I always told people not to stand and belay.

Hey, c'mon, we all know that guns don't kill people, people with guns kill people.

I had to look at a map to realize I had Cleveland and Cincinnati's locations mixed up. Between SoIl sandstone and all that yummy southeast stuff, Cinci would be not half bad, Cleveland is a tougher row to hoe.

Historically, both regions supported a substantial native population. There's a living to be had, its just not the same as the one we have right now. You're right though that most modern populations would have a tough time with subsistence living, but that's true pretty much anywhere in the US.

Yeah, I really appreciate a pointless "Just Say No" posture as a substitute for ideas or action. This is what the new House majority has up its sleeve?

I bet we're in the last decade of prohibition. It seems inevitable. Yeah, I can remember thinking the 70's were the last decade of prohibition too...

That Wolf Bauer piece is classic!

I miss Emily Litella...

Oh, thanks so much for exhuming this thread Jibby. Raindog's been around for quite awhile, I'm sure he's pushed himself plenty, but not necessarily in the same way you do. It's apples and oranges. What he does climbing wise is plenty valid, though I don't agree with his summary dismissal of what others do.

How rude I am not a tool Im a human being! No no, not YOU, the rude gym employee or member in Ohio would be the tool I'm referring to!

What, and he registered back when he was in high school in 05? I haven't looked at IP addresses, but I'll wager you're wrong. Besides, the Cynical one isn't nearly as impressed with himself enough to be that individual. Cynicalwoodsman, don't worry about it, I don't think you really upset anyone, they just didn't agree with you. The gym isn't climbing, but it's a climbing-like activity that can leave you stronger in the spring so you can re-learn how to be subtle with your feet. Living in Olympia, the gym here is small and friendly. I don't know what their qualification policies are, as a venerable old fart with decades of experience and a lifetime membership they've never bothered to test me. There are easier routes to lead, including vertical walls, but the slabs are indeed all TR. Your gym in Ohio may be different, but there's no reason to act as if a Tool's opinion matters, so cultivate some gym buddies with a compatible attitude and you'll be just fine.

No, it's better to glue on a piece of native rock you find at the base. Consider drilling it out and bolting it on to improve longevity. Then no one would even know, if you did it right. Well, only if everywhere looked like Maple Canyon.

"On the crux in the dark" is kind of an understated awe inspiring description. Looks like a wild outing, how long does daylight last up there this time of year?

Awww, that's so cute; my little forum is growing up!
