you can rent snowshoes from REI and walk into avy terrain. you can't rent rope, harness, rack and start climbing a multipitch route. snowshoeing has a much lower barrier to entry than climbing (i'm not counting soloing)

i'm particularly targeting the seattlelites, to see if they're for the former but against the latter, which could be a case of NIMBY

this is funny stuff! John_Frieh: To find a neutrino. Raindawg: Because the road was in its way. And this is what happens when people place roads in the mountains: Gary_Yngve: The photo of the chicken crossing the road is oversharpened.

I don't understand how Bhutto's party could annoint her 19-year-old son as chairman of the party, unless it's completely symbolic. At 19, there's no way anyone has enough experience to lead a whole party. Sounds to me like they're more royalty than democracy.

Go Erden! You can do it!

Yesterday at 6AM in the Bellevue area, the sidewalks and gutters seemed pretty icy, but the main roads were fine on my bicycle (fat knobby tires). Given that I was also carrying a large pack w/ snowshoes & plastic boots, I'm sure everyone around thought I was nuts.

1 missing in avalanche while descending from Muir
Gary_Yngve replied to OlympicMtnBoy's topic in Mount Rainier NP
from NWAC: A climber is missing after triggering a slide and being caught in Edith Basin above Paradise on Mt Rainer Tuesday. An early morning snowpit Wednesday in the area revealed the weak layer at the crust when failure occurred about 4 feet down on the crust with compression test 5 and Rutschblock 4. Slides not initiating down to the crust may begin in more shallow storm layer weaknesses but likely step down to the crust layer, making some large and very dangerous slides possible. -
recalled Petzl Sarkens - opting not to return them
Gary_Yngve replied to Sean_T_Stevenson's topic in The Gear Critic
I'm hanging on to mine too. I don't care if they may not replace mine later... I just really like them. -
Thanks for everyone who replied so far. For what it's worth, I'm not seeking advice on finding a job -- I have several offers -- just curious how other folks have found their jobs. Looking forward to see what others have to say.

i know a lot of people here have had been laid off or quit in the past few years and have since found new jobs. how did you find those jobs? -network/inside connection? -contact the HR dept of companies directly? -go through a job board such as Monster or CareerBuilder? -go through some niche job board / niche web community? -Craigslist or similar? do you think the job seeker -> employer matching process is broken?

This avy wasn't so deep because the deposition was spread out over so large an area (not a terrain trap). On average, about 3-4 feet deep. It certainly had some power, considering it took out that 50' tall 6" wide fir. Where the depth was greater was where the deposition had abutted against trees and piled up, to probably 6-8 feet deep. The blocks were icy and chunky, much reminescent of walking through talus. If we had to do a probe line through there, I would have wanted a steel one-piece probe, as my fancy carbon-fiber collapsable one would probably have been wrecked by the end of the day. One theory is that a smaller avy took out the three, and the following day, a climax avy covered up any remaining signs.

I got one of the evasote pads from Jim (Pro Mountain Sports). It's black, not yellow, but same material. The dimensions of my pad are 20.375" x 71.25" x .47"

Chalk? You mean anthrax? I've heard bunches of anecdotal stories about folks carrying on X, folks getting X confiscated, etc. The summary is that individual TSA employees are incredibly inconsistent. My opinion is that the airlines are more consistent about delivering your bags.

I did the scramble route on Black Peak this time of year about four or five years ago. Much fun on a cold crisp clear day. Cascade concrete covered the talus slopes on the approach, which frozen avy chunks being only mildy annoying. Wing Lake was frozen solid.

Another danger of girth-hitching slings together is they form a focal point for wear-and-tear from rubbing. One time at Mt. Erie I saw a girth hitch of 1-inch webbing that someone else set up be burned halfway through from half a day of top roping.
