  1. wow, i'll need to check that out. i think it must be sheer habit that causes me to take the bike lanes.

    awesome!

so most any concert, play, etc., is dull and boring because it's rehearsed? those all need to be improv, or else they're not creative?

    Sexy Time!

i really don't see why someone would get more out of using a prostitute than just masturbating, especially because any possible fluid exchange would be kept to zero to prevent spreading STIs.
  4. waddington traverse mazeno ridge are you going to get into ski traverses? the complete coast range traverse? lowell's baker to rainier piecewise traverse? haute route?
  5. BGT is still blocked right around the Fremont bridge... if you're riding west, you can cross from the BGT to the bike lane on the right side of 34th either at the Stone Way intersection (via the signal w/ traffic) or by jumping the curb and cutting across if there's light traffic. Theoretically, it's possible to stay on the left side, but it narrows to a sidewalk + a bike lane going the other way, so it's not good for going fast. Once you're at the intersection at the Fremont Bridge, continue straight for two blocka and pick up the BGT again. Once you get past Fred Meyer or so, the trail goes away and you're on the street. Plenty of room, just beware the tracks near the Ballard Bridge. Really not a big deal. Way faster than the bus, possibly faster than car depending on traffic. A few months ago I made great time, going from UW to Ballard Ave & Market Way in 22 minutes.
  6. this is another take on shit, but funny:
  7. that's a good point. plenty of americans will binge on a whole pint of ben & jerrys in one sitting. in terms of saturated fat, that's 3/4 a stick of butter.
  8. Hah, that is the classic saying. I've been trying to pick up French cuisine lately myself. It is true to some extent, but not that bad. If browning or sauteing, oil can be substituted in place of butter, to reduce the saturated fat. I've had success too with reducing the amount of butter by 1/3 and still getting much the right texture/flavor. It seems a lot of the butter/cream gets used in sauces or creamy soups. The cream isn't as bad as butter, as it's about 35-40% fat. As for poaching liquids or buttery sauces, you don't eat all the poaching liquid (some will be used for a sauce or nage), and sauces are applied in moderation, due to their concentrated flavor. (Last night I reduced 3C wine and 2C stock to less than a cup.) Where the saturated fat and cholesterol really seems to hit is with souffles, custards, creme anglais, pastry doughs, etc., especially due to egg yolks. But I'd rather eat one of those once a week than a twinkie. The other thing to keep in mind is that when a recipe calls for a stick of butter, it's probably for at least four people.

    awesome!

isn't 5.14+ *trad* still cutting-edge? heck, 5.13+ trad is still cutting-edge in my book, considering how long it took city park to get a true redpoint. she got the first redpoint of the route, rather than a repeat. the route was known for a long time. i don't see any difference between this route and cobra crack. cobra crack was a big deal. yeah, some day some freak will onsight it, but i think there's still plenty of excitement in working hard trad routes.
  10. What about not overall healthcare, but just healthcare for kids? (and not force people onto the govt plan if they have another plan) The deal w/ kids is it's not their choice whether to get healthcare. My theory is a kid who is denied an education due to health problems will be a further burden to society later. Give a kid healthcare, or pay for him to rot in prison as an adult? Or do you have another way to encourage responsibility of the parents in only creating kids they can care for? I agree with you though that blanket welfare programs are bad news.
  11. refreshing to read this view. hillary's health care plan runs dead opposite to the ideas expressed here, and it pisses me off every time she harrasses everyone else about theirs.

    awesome!

Cobra Crack was projected for a long time too.
  13. yeah, i second ubuntu as the easiest of the linuxes. i dunno if linux is the right solution for you though (aside from its cheapness). i guess since it's free you can give it a try. one problem i've always had is it seems to be a step behind windows regarding the latest formats, e.g. Adobe Flash 9, Word 2007 docx, etc. when i was in undergrad i went w/ linux because it was cool to hate billg, but honestly some things were more awkward. i've been mostly using windows in grad school, though i've had access to linux terminals for certain stuff. having a mac arriving soon.. we'll see how i like it.
  14. Mark, glad it works so well for you. I've had both successful and unsuccessful relationships with both climbers and nonclimbers. Certainly everything said here needs to be taken with a grain of salt, as it's a little cynical or distilled to where it can be the theme of a Seinfeld episode.

    awesome!

btw - just my opinion, but your derogatory name for Raindawg is in poor style, especially outside of spray. i guess avatars of mods are not held to a higher standard.
  16. Gary_Yngve

    awesome!

I don't understand -- there's no bolts involved here. And if you didn't want Raindawg to jump in, why did you post? That's almost as dumb as Bush saying, "Bring them on," when he dared the insurgents to attack our troops.

on alpinist.com, they say the grade has not been confirmed yet, nor has rodden suggested a grade... probably harder than 14b... maybe even 14d? not sure how the grades for these sorts of routes work out, given it's hard to get consensus, and a route's difficulty at such a high level may be very dependent on one's body dimensions (overall height/reach, thickness of fingers, etc.) after this report and Colin's article, though, I'm waiting for BD or NF to start selling hyper-expensive duct tape, as it is being used by top climbers for everything from face protection to quick unracking.
  18. cool article written by Colin on his climbing and how his climbing has influenced his other life choices
  19. It's also good to have separate circles for post breakup, as all the common circles have issues, at least at first. A corollary is if you have a messy breakup in a small town, one of the two has to move elsewhere.
  20. i think climbing can act as an amplifier for the state of a relationship, good or bad. there's also: "Why are you going climbing w/ your buds but not climbing w/ me?" "Is it because I'm not good enough?" "Is it because you don't love me?" and "Why do you get to go climbing when I have to stay home to take care of [house/kids/dog/whatever]" and "When I'm sick you should stay home with me and take care of me instead of going climbing" ...
  21. I could care less that Bush endorsed McCain. I could care less that Farrakhan endorsed Obama. I vote for who I think is best, not who someone tells me is best.
  22. i listed a few options, so i'll assume all of them are it. why? what do you need your estate for once you're dead? don't you think your kids should earn their own incomes rather than be deadbeats like paris hilton?
  23. KK and others, What if there were a law that estates worth more than $100mil were taxed by 75%? would you be for or against? certainly you wouldn't be directly affected by it. from the selfish point of view, wouldn't it be better to tax not you, rather than to tax you? i guess what i don't understand is if you have a fundamental moral objection to the estate tax or rather an objection to such a tax when it affects you. do you see any difference between a higher income tax vs. a lower income tax plus an estate tax?
  24. you can try burning a self-contained knoppix linux cd on another machine and booting up into linux. then you can potentially copy the files to elsewhere before you do something like reformat. you can also try borrowing someone else's keyboard and mouse and plug them into your laptop... sometimes that will work
  25. So KK, I think you missed half my argument from before. Instead of paying say 30% income tax per year (I'm grossly simplifying), what if you instead could opt to pay 15% income tax per year plus 50% of your estate (to account for interest accrued and income spent on transient items/services)? Or on the contrary, what do you think of a tax bracket of say 50% for the portions of annual incomes exceeding ten million dollars? Feel free to fudge some of the numbers.
