had some awesome omakase at mashiko in west seattle a few months ago... i need to go back.
-
I'm remembering a Kaiten place somewhere between Kyoto and Nara. Beat the hell out of all but the best sushi here. Was great to come back from the mountains all dirty and stinky and down 50 pieces of nigiri. Certainly I love a good night of omakase, but there's a place for the kaiten too.

and how many cock pushups?

i highly approve of sushi parties. it lets you buy bunches of different ingredients (besides fish, various mushrooms, sprouts, avocados, mangoes, shiso...) and play around with them all
-
Reminds me of a sushi place in Japan that was 1500 Yen all-you-can-eat for men, and 1000 Yen all-you-can-eat for women. You would have taken them out of business!

Denali Expedition 2008 - Looking for 10-12 member

no. gravity is just a theory. -
actually if it was just the burner that blew, then it might suffice to replace that burner element, if you can find it... but it might be that your stove had fuses on it too... sounds like an excuse to buy a fancy new stove
-
i burned out an oven element before.. same sort of arcing that left the element broken and covered w/ white powder. i think it's just something that happens to old elements. induction looks cool, just you may have to buy some new pots/pans, depending on what you've been cooking on?

wow, i can't believe i didn't notice this thread until now. did much get modded out, or was VertHiker the only "outsider" posting? ====== on evolution, my feeling is science explains the worldly and religion explains the spiritual, completely orthogonal to each other. the theory of evolution is a cornerstone of science, much like the theory of gravity. i don't know why so many american christians get defensive against evolution; i don't think that sentiment is widespread in europe. heck, charles darwin is buried in westminster abbey. ====== regarding biblical literalists, sheesh, there have been so much "evolution" in orally spoken tales and text translated from one language to another, that taking each word at 100% is completely illogical. our constitution is a mere 200+ years old, and we've amended it and reinterpreted it many times. furthermore, suppose God tried to sit down with the Israelites and explain to them quantum mechanics, DNA, calculus, plate tectonics... the ancients wouldn't have been able to understand any of it, let alone have the vocabulary to write about it. ====== Regarding VertHiker's Denali trip, I hope they have a good time. I think it's funny though how as climbers, some of us are more likely to criticize a climber who walks up to us and says, "We're having a bible study in our tent if you're interested" versus one who walks up to us interjects the latest sheep joke. ====== All in all, I'm not sure any of the dialogue (or is it diatribe) here really caused anyone to reach a more moderate view... just further polarized folks. -
that game ruled! brady and moss looked like a bunch of weenies

i had pneumonia three times before i was 8. been fine since. probably due to me being born 2 months early. i recall breathing with all the secondary muscles, sucking in the skin just above the sternum a good half-inch deep each breath... fun times. Lots of green goo too.

thurs night i got a crick in my neck from sleeping weird. it's on the mend (i'm fully operational today, don't quite have 100% ROM yet) but yesterday was really bad. my entire right trapezius was really tight, and i was walking around really gimpy, with my head cocked left, and my left shoulder up and right shoulder down. if i were lying down and wanted to sit up, i'd need to support my head from behind with a hand to be able to get up. In it's worst state, I found using a computer to be painful because the neck muscles that were going wacko were also trying to stabilize my head. the two questions are: prevention: I had this happen to me (same side) once before about 15 months ago. Any triggers for it? Sleeping position? Stress? Luck? Would certain stretches help prevent it? treatment: NSAIDs didn't seem to help. Nor did alcohol. Nonprofessional massage helped, at least temporarily. Same with hot bath and pounding on my trapezius with a meat tenderizer. Traction via an improvised C-collar would seem to help -- maybe I'll make one for "next time." Sleep seems to be the best remedy. Any drugs that could do the trick without compromising my ability to think / use a computer? Any other tricks that could reduce the pain / facilitate the recovery?

Cerro Torre traverse- Colin stikes again!

Waaay back when, Bob went climbing with Colin in Alaska. Let the waaaaay back when rest. -
Sounds like you want to make the move to Cali because it has the best opportunities, but because it's change and uncertainty, there's hesitation and second-guessing. Just say yes, and you'll feel a lot better now that you've come to a decision and committed all the way to it.

KK, speaking of bass, did you get to see Failing performed live a few months back? this is a different performance of Failing SC, Satie's works are very beautiful, but they're mostly piano solos or have been lightly orchestrated. Telemann would have the same issues with Vivaldi or any other baroque orchestral works -- half the symphony wouldn't be playing. Maybe suitable for one piece of the evening. But it might be better to have a separate baroque orchestra or separate baroque concerts. I'm all for more Shostakovich.

i think most American symphonies are like that.. they have to play standard fare to keep the masses happy and can only go off the beaten track for maybe 1 of 3 pieces at a concert
-
yeah, i've really enjoyed his appearances at Town Hall. for that matter, regarding the Seattle Symphony, i wonder how many years Gerard Schwarz has left in him. thanks for reminding me to buy tix to Lynn Harrell.. that concert is gonna rock!
-
how was it? i was playing duplicate bridge last night
-
i was talking back to KK

you betcha... i've been enjoying a bowmore 12-yo and laphroaig 10-yo "quarter cask"

there needs to be a tunneling rating standard now. T1: minor groveling to get past a lip, just a few minutes T2: an hour of digging, several feet of tunneling T3: a few hours of digging, more than ten feet of tunneling, some obj hazard/instability ... T7: Chunnel sounds like Colin might have had a T4? -
thanks for the input so far. i think i'm going to sit tight for a few weeks -- rumors are that new versions of the macbook pro will come out soon

I've been toying with the idea of buying a Macbook Pro, but the significant extra cost over a PC has been a bit of a hurdle. Some advantages: -UNIX-like terminal -can run windows apps through virtualization Some disadvantages: -friggin' one-button touchpad -the 17" is super-pricy, and it has souped up processor, etc. that i don't need. i want the 15" specs w/ the 17" display. any opinions out there from developers who use Macs? what about converting my mind from PC land? How painful is the 1-mouse-button thing? anyone get cygwin (or something equivalent) working w/ Vista?
