Ok, that sounds reasonable to me. In this case, the subject has likely more to lose than the poster/viewers have to gain.

Is it always so clear-cut? If you remove the photo, you are censoring your own expression. If you keep the photo, you are compromising someone's privacy. Certainly the safest route for everyone is to obtain permission, and certainly if there is any possibility of commercial use / licensing in the future, to obtain a written release.

I think we're both confused about what each other is talking about. So let's start with just someone posting a recognizable photo of someone on the Internet. Say I randomly see Fred Beckey climbing somewhere and take a picture of him and post it. If Fred were to object to the photo and ask me to take it down and I refuse, who is more right ethically speaking? If I had the caption, "Fred's old, but still climbing strong," but Fred was offended by the implication that he's old, and Fred asks me to take it down and I refuse, who is more right ethically speaking?

i never saw the exact photo and caption, so i can't say for sure. how about the following strawman? if you (or maybe better, the average prudent person) would not say the caption face-to-face to the uniquely identifiable subject being photographed, then it is an inappropriate caption to have on an image posted on the internet, unless the caption is for legitimate journalistic purposes.

I guess what I'm saying is if A posts a fair-use photo of a uniquely recognizable B taken in public, then in my mind, if B asks to have it be removed and A refuses, than neither has the moral high ground. However if the photo of B gets associated with offensive replies and A refuses to take it down, then B has the moral high ground. Now comes in C, the moderators of the site. They can do whatever they feel is right.

Legally speaking as I understand it (I am not a lawyer), the photo was taken in a public place, meaning no permission required, and the photographer is free to publish it noncommercially as fair-use under the first amendment. That said, I think it is fair for an unwitting subject to ask for a photo to be removed when the subsequent replies associated with the photo are lewd and harassing.

i created a brilliant project involving AVL trees that i was so psyched about. i zipped up the starting code and the data and posted it, not realizing I HAD ALSO INCLUDED THE SOLUTION!!! thankfully i don't think many in the class saw it by the time i fixed it. i told them to delete the soln and not look at it or distribute it. here's to hoping the honor policy works (and i told them to expect a question on the exam that would be easy if you spent time honestly doing the assignment and learning). and i was so excited by how well i felt i had crafted the assignment!!!

Here's something truly bizarre: after a quick reading of the 22nd amendment, Hillary could be pres and Bill could be VP, and once elected, if Hillary were no longer Pres, then Bill could get promoted to Pres.

Assume it's McCain vs Obama. How would be the best VPs for each? Do you look for: a) uniting your party's base b) reaching across to moderates c) someone for 2016 Would Huckabee or Romney harm McCain election-wise as VP? Would Hillary harm Obama election-wise as VP? Would any contender be too stuck up (prez or nada) to be a VP? What about something bizarre? Colin Powell or Wesley Clark?

What credit cards do you recommend for good cashbacks? (I don't ever keep a balance unless I accidentally pay a few days late (happens about once every two years), which they're pretty good at giving me a get-out-of-jail-free card on, because they don't want to lose me as a customer.) One trend I noticed is they hook you in with a good cashback offer, only to reduce the benefits after a year or two. (This happened to a Citi card I had that offered 5% back on groceries, which is one of my biggest nonrent expenses; they have since dropped that down to 2%, I think)

Yeah, I'm all better now. Seemed to have a half-life of 24 hours. By the third day I was able to turn my head quickly to check my blind spot on my bike. But the first day was darn incapacitating! Hopefully I can take better care of myself to make it much longer until the next occurrence.

I'm remembering a Kaiten place somewhere between Kyoto and Nara. Beat the hell out of all but the best sushi here. Was great to come back from the mountains all dirty and stinky and down 50 pieces of nigiri. Certainly I love a good night of omakase, but there's a place for the kaiten too.

i highly approve of sushi parties. it lets you buy bunches of different ingredients (besides fish, various mushrooms, sprouts, avocados, mangoes, shiso...) and play around with them all
