The Mazamas WFA class requires CPR and First Aid as ChrisT says, but they don't require that you take it from them. Easier than trying to do both from them, as it will likely spread the whole thing out over two seasons.
What is the most versitile picket length for Cascades snow? Somehow I ended up with two 3 foot MSRs, and that seems way overkill in my limited experience for the hard snow we get here. I was thinking about cutting one in half to make two 18 inch pickets. Too short? Too short to use as a deadman in softer snow? Thx.
MtnHigh - Illumination looked ok Saturday, a bit thin but definately climbable, still a lot of rock showing. I'll post a link to a couple of pics tonight if you want.
I like them so far. Took a couple runs below Illumination Saddle Saturday and they held up well on the hardpack. Not the quickest of skis I've been on, but they are easy to turn and easy to hold a long carve. Still felt great on the icy/steep sections even though it's a shorter ski for me. Fun long turns under Palmer and they did fine at high speeds. Reserving full judgement for the deep crud and wet powder. Quite impressed with the Dynafits too, once I figured out the toe tour vs downhill mode.
I've tried a rasberry fruit syrup to mix with the brown rice syrup. Somewhat palatable, but never tasted quite like the Cliff Shot flavor I was trying to emulate. Chocolate syrup was a little better.
Lazers, Tri-Steps, and K2 Shuksans. Got the boots and bindings from Telemark-Pyrenees (thumbs up!) and the skis from OMC. Not really affordable, but the boots were a gift. Paid my dues last year on Trekkers, so I'm pretty psyched...
Isn't there some big name climber who (proclaimed he) only knew 4 knots and that was enough for anything he needed to do?
I believe it was attributed to Jim Bridwell by John Long in his Anchors book.
I have a full length ThermaRest Lite (the thinner one) and it works well for me. The thin design is only a bit of a problem on winter outings (I have a small piece of foam pad to supplement when I need it), and I love the way it folds in half lengthwise before rolling up - ends up being a roll about 10 inches long by 5 inches diameter which fits well inside a pack.
Lift serve at Skibowl yesterday, not much open and limited coverage. Plenty of untracked and soft stuff though if you look for it (mostly under the ropes). Conditions looked nice higher up, wish I had the time to get to the west side.
