    Old sayings

"don't worry about it unless it turns black and drops off" ... the extent of sympathy I got from my father for any childhood injuries.

  4. nice to hear that company will customize . some people might think there were no options other than those specifically advertised or reported. I bring up the snowshoers only because you specifically pointed them out in your introduction as a crowd that may be under-educated about the hazards of the terrain they travel.
  5. a course geared to "very strong" "expert level" skiers and boarders doesn't do much good for your clueless snowshoer friends. Did you research any options for the non-glisse crowd?
  6. Hot Hot Heat - Make Up the Break Down is worth buying and not stealing. But they are starting to get popular enough that they aren't cool to listen to anymore i guess they are in the same vein as the flava-du-jour garage rock stuff like Jet and White Stripes and the Hives etc. Except clever and not all 4/4 time signature. I bet they wear skinny ties. SUB POP yo.
  7. "For Auction" ..... duh!
  8. what and ruin your fun? the amusement of watching you get all panty-twisted kinda outweighs the annoyinosity of the e-bay links keep up the good fight brutha!

    Quick Thinking Cops

I found $2200 cash that was probably 'drug trade' related once. I bought a bass guitar and a trip to France.

    what law did she break?
  12. I'm just calling you out on the typical "dumb it down for the girlfriend" comment. I know exactly what you were getting at, and I respect your desire to keep your loved one safe and low stress. But today I am feeling feisty and I claim it's still a condescending way to describe a climb ... peace
  13. let me just point out that the thread was started by a woman who climbs and responded to by numerous other women who climb who expressed various points of view ... there isn't right and wrong here, just a bunch of equally valuable opinions. It'd be nice if you weren't dismissive of those opinions that don't jive with your own
  14. I thought it was called a "not knot"? The climbing application I have heard of for sheep shank was in one of those ... "you only have one rope to rappel but all your anchors are more than 1/2 rope length apart WHAT DO YOU DO???" threads. The idea was to cut the middle thread of the sheep shank, rap down and shake the rope free. rope gets a little shorter with each rap but otherwise BOMBER!
  15. because if the newbie happens to be a wife or girlfriend they need an easy route that's even easier than easy?
  16. I will never be behind the idea of a forum that excludes anyone from participating simply for some aspect of their being that they cannot control. To be more blunt: Boys don't have a choice that they are boys, but they do have control over whether or not they act like assholes around girls. If they exercise that control then we can have some great discussions about any topic. Beyond that I don't care if there is a henpen or not. Nothing is forcing me to read or post to threads that don't interest me. I encourage anything that will increase interesting content on this site (keeping in mind of course that this is cascadeclimbers not some niceynice place). I know that there are women who read lots but post little and it would be great to hear more from them. For example look at those pictures that Mtngrrrl won the photo contest with ... I would love to hear the stories behind those shots and I am sure I am not the only one. I don't really think that a women's focused forum is the magic bullet that will change the gender bias (or however you want to describe it) of cascadeclimbers.com, but I don't know. If there are more women lurkers out there who feel that introducing a new forum like that would make a difference to whether or not they would post more maybe they would like to send PM to one of the female moderators (icegirl, ehmmic, minx and fern) and share their thoughts privately. From the little I do know of the female lurker population of cc.com I am sure that if there is any climbing forum with a "Girl's Room" that could avoid the descent into banal topics like "How to pee in a harness" and so on then this is the one.
  17. I think +/- grades in a guidebook are dumb. Pick the best integer for publication and use your judgement on the day you climb it to decide whether it is +/- . I'm not interested in how coastal climb compare to rockies climbs on a scale of difficulty. I'm interested in how coastal climbs compare to each other.
  18. controversial??? the "where do I clip my belay biner" thread went 4 pages! Sit back friend, this debate hasn't even gotten started

  21. also: hoards and hordes "here here" and "hear hear"
  22. they're tapered so that the hanger end is larger diameter than the tip so that the ice core gets pushed out easier. Smiley screws are larger diameter than BD screws, which is nice when you can draft old screw holes on popular climbs. it is always fun to read about BD voodoo that makes their gear so much better and more special than any other gear. They sure are good at marketing!
  23. I like the sassy yet modest approach the fellow on the left has chosen with the bright red golf shirt just barely peeking out of his grey polypro. Accessorizing with a red bandana and ice axe just emphasizes that this is a man of action AND style. Notice how he is ever so subtlely blocking the bearded guy behind him? He's an alpha for sure. Keep an eye out for him in the mounties Intermediate coarse pictures, he's going places!

    Old Gortex

if you want a waterproof jacket why would you get a soft shell? Get a coated nylon rain slicker if all you are going to do is sit around in it. Or get an umbrella.
  25. I started carrying a bunch of tied slings last year where previously I had only sewn ones. And I found I ended up leaving them all over the place! I guess previously I had always found ways to avoid leaving gear behind but once I had the tied ones convenient I'd use them. I only ever seem to find sewn runners left behind by other people though. breaking strength of knot vs sewn is a non-issue. I have heard of slings failing due to melting and slicing on cable, but the weak point in a runner is usually the carabiner.
