  1. Did one of you say something?
  2. On the flip-side j_b, the DOD budget also covers thing such as the civil works projects that the Army Corps of Engineers does...flood control projects, channel dredging, etc, as well as Corps recreation facilities (many reservoirs with rec areas are administered by the Corp), and Wetlands protection/permitting activites through the Corps Regulatory Branch, Veterans social services (undefunded, admmittedly), and many other things that aren't directly related to defense. Your point is well taken, but your bias is clear. BTW, Did you examine the table I linked above? It supports your tax argument.
  3. If you want a look at long term trends in the marginal tax rates take a gander at Stocks for the Long Run - Siegel. There is a section devoted to taxes with some telling charts, particularly WRT marginal rates. Or LOOK AT THIS TABLE: http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/TaxFacts/TFDB/Content/PDF/toprate_historical.PDF
  4. Don't remember honestly. Maybe on "Ascending Rhythm"? Seems like I saw it on a rainy day in the Mt Shop in Curry.
  5. Yeah, 1990 the "Lethal Weapon 3" team was another 3 guard team like this one. Bruce Dalrymple was the center on that team, the third guard was Brian Oliver. They lost 90-81 to UNLV who went on to beat Duke in the finals. I'll always wonder what that final game (this year) would have looked like if Ed Nelson hadn't transfered to UCONN and Chris Bosch hadn't left for the NBA. I'm not feeling good about adding those teams. We compete in football...the same year we lost in the final four we won the Natl Football title, went deep in the baseball tourney, had a top 5 golf team and some olympic hopefuls on the track team. Damn, around the same time the Braves started their big run and Evander Holyfield won the belt. It was a good time to be a sports fan in Atlanta. Having to deal with FSU every year is tough, but them and Miami? Geez!! Might as well play in the SEC.
  6. We got spanked, it was ugly. Big Red in the middle couldn't handle Okafur and we made terrible shot selections. The only reason we beat them in the preseason NIT was because Okafur was hurt. Still good to see the homeboys in the big game. We went to the Final Four in my freshman year there and probably had a much more talented team then but lost in the semis. I love March Madness!
  7. Brilliant! The letters section and all the dumb fucks who miss the satire (how is that even possible?) are great.

  11. Just for comparison Fairweather, in the last 40 years we spent $321 billion on K-12 (your numbers), in the last 12 months we spent over $100 billion on the Iraq debacle (costofwar.com).
  12. I live in the most tax friendly state in the country and being a federal employee here I get a 25% tax free cost of living adjustment (which completely offsets the federal income taxes I pay). Since there are no state income taxes, no state sales tax, and the Fred Meyer is strategically placed about 100 yards outside the city limits, I effectively pay no taxes other than on gasoline and indirect property taxes through my rent. In fact, the state PAYS ME around $1500 - $2000 per year for simply living here (it's dividends from the oil revenues). This coming year the Fairbanks North Star Borough will have to lay off around 50 teachers, and cut virtually all extra-curricular activities because of budget shortfalls. We don't have high-art architechture school buildings, they're all over 10-20 years old, some are probably 50 years old, and we aren't building new ones. Alaskans have this illusion that they are fiercely independent, which in alot of ways is true. I love that attitude, and it fits with my personality. Part of the reason I came here was to get out of mainstream America. But, the Alaskan economy turns on the govt dime and people up here are spoiled in that sense. Until about 20 years ago there was a state income tax, and there was no dividend paid from the oil revenues. Earnings from the investment of the oil revenue royalties either went to increase the principal of the account or were used to fund state govt. Now a large portion of the profits are paid out as dividends. Our schools are getting fucked, but any talk of reintroducing a state income tax or a sales tax, or a one-time $20K payout to everyone in lieu of future dividend payments is met with scorn. Now everyone wants to bitch about the schools not getting funded, but they're not willing to give up anything. They think the govt should take care of it but it's almost as if they don't realize that they ARE the govt. The point is, it could be worse.
  13. I have conflicting views on the education bit. Clearly the fancy shit they put in colleges (copper facade ex) these days is wasteful. My alma mater, a state school, is included (although they do sell out to corporate interest in many ways to get extra loot...the new Ford, as in Ford motor com, Mech Eng Bldg for example) But I don't think post-secondary is what's at issue here, it's K-12. 118% Increase at the Federal level. Let's break it down: What is the increase in sheer numbers of kids in the system in that time? 118% in eight years time is around 10% annual growth. I don't know the answer, I'm just suggesting that it's not as simple as saying "well we doubled the spending since '96". Are those numbers adjusted to a constant year or just raw increases? Without knowing the population growth among K-12, the inflation rate, and whether the "118% increase" is in raw dollars or consant year dollars, the stats are completely meaningless.
  14. And for all the ladies and petite fellas, Northern Mountain Supply has these in size Small (no other sizes) for $49!! Screaming deal. I have one of these I picked up on clearance for $80 in the fall. It's an awesome belay coat, you won't be disappointed.
  15. Impressive. I am surprised and encouraged by the fact that Blackwater has their own choppers to support their forces and that they were able to not only keep them supplied with ammo and ordinance, but also able to extract our wounded Marine. Kudos to Blackwater.
