Ask Matt Anderson, he's a big fan of using 'em freeclimbing. I only own #1,2 and use them primarily for aid. They're bomber in hard rock, but more unpredictable in sandstone (never tried 'em in basalt).They can be hard to clean if you aid on them, and I think the larger sizes are in the same range as the WC zero cams and black alien/00 tcu. My biggest use for them is as a substitute for LA sized pins.

We posture that we have sanctions on Cuba because...they are communist. WTF? In reality, nobody is willing to say "Ok Castro, we tried to get rid of your ass, and we still think you're bad for your country, but we're not going to punish the cuban people any longer because when the USSR fell, you were rendered a non-threat to us". I've done it. Retro-bolted trad route I wanted to lead on gear, first piece a #2 micro at 25ft after a low percentage sloper sidepull crux, then right into a crux dyno sequence at 35ft, second piece of gear a bomber #2 camalot if you make the dyno. Trivial low 5th after the first 35ft. Opening sequence off the ground was like a 25ft V4, fish-in the micro, launch right into a five move V5 ending with an all out dyno 10-12ft above the micro. You need some slack for the dyno so a fall would put you about 8ft off the ground if the micro held and your belayer didn't shit himself. I don't like hauling a pad around if I'm doing roped climbing (done it twice), but I couldn't give two shits if someone deducts style points. I'd rather have my ankles and heels intact if I didn't make. I've done this on 2 routes. On the one I described above, the route went up trad...came to find out after I did it that the FA used pre-placed gear. Perfect style is great, being able to climb tomorrow because you knew when to do the smart thing is better.

If you don't know him personally, don't speak to his fitness in "representing" the US. He is there for one reason: To protect the civilian leadership assets. I think he is obviously doing a superb job. After all, he is alive, his immediate co-workers are alive, and the assets he is there to protect are alive. That is the only measure of success.

Get on the 45 degree wall, train on relatively large crimps, add weight to your body to increase the intesity rather than using smaller holds. I believe you can train crimp strength with less chance of injury and equal results by using larger holds instead of tweaking on the smallest ones at bodyweight. Two-armed hangs with elbows slightly bent and weight added is probably less likely to contribute to shoulder and elbow problems than one armed straight-arm hangs. That's my take.
