My girlfriend's going to be out of town for two weeks and I'd like to get away while I have few obligations. Camp out somewhere at night, climb when I can, work in Starbucks when I can't--that's the idea. I'll definitely be in Leavenworth for a few days late next week, then maybe Smith for the latter half of my "working vacation" . My mom is in PDX, so I'll probably be stopping there for a bit, too, perhaps on the way to Smith. Hell, I'll go pretty much anywhere I can camp, work, and climb in the sun. If anyone wants a partner for cragging, alpine, or skiing from April 26 through May 9, PM me. I'm looking for ideas on where to stash my stuff in 11worth or the Bend area, since I don't feel comfortable leaving my laptop in the back of the car. Perhaps a gym where I can get a locker? I would happily compensate any kind local who gives me a key to their backyard shed for a week. Also, any good places to get WiFi in Leavenworth, Bend, Yakima, US2/Index/Monroe?

A UH-1 responded to an accident at Vantage a couple years ago. I assume it belonged to this MAST unit. Too bad they're leaving. NCNP uses private contractors and is also assisted by Coast Guard and Navy helicopters, I think. I don't know if the Army gets involved very often, since other assets are probably closer to the park.

Holy smokes! Did you guys hear about those Alien cams breaking? Read all about it here: http://www.northwestclimbers.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=11

I find using a headset helps with phone-sex-related back problems. I don't drop the phone at the wrong moment now, either.

Achtung! Just make sure ze braunshirt can be tucked into ze slacks, which are to be tucked into ze jackboots. Sonst wird bestraft.

I saw a Mountie wearing what looked like a wetsuit with kneepads at Vantage last weekend. Aid climbing class, I think.

Part of my usual training regimen. Good point about not walking around on concrete, though. Discovery Park's got some softer trails. Walking/running on the beach will either make your ankles super strong or sprain them trying. I'm curious, too, about why you'll be carrying so much weight. Trail maintenance with a chainsaw? Rescue work? Ranger School?

What's the ginger supposed to do? I mean, other than make your hand smell good. Stimulate circulation? As a general rule, ice an injury during the first 48 hours to keep swelling down, then use heat after that to improve circulation and help it heal faster.

Well, the treadmill's not exactly "varied terrain". You could just put on some shorts-over-polypro and walk up and down Queen Anne with a pack on, adding weight as you get stronger. Seriously. (Except for the polypro.) Your back, legs, neck, and shoulders will get tight doing this, so some yoga or stretching will help, as would a regular massage. My girlfriend's a massage therapist, so if you need a good one, just ask me

Rest it for several weeks. Definitely stop doing fingerboard exercises. Might be time to brush up on the slab technique. If you strained a tendon or something, it's just going to take a while to heal. If you repeatedly reinjure it, it'll just turn into a chronic problem.

Nah, that's just the po-lice themselves, doing "undercover" work. If hundreds of thousands of people are protesting, I think it's worth paying attention to them, regardless of whether you think they should just go eat torta or whatever. What's the alternative? Fairweather can't be bothered to shoot all them wetbacks himself. Why not make it as easy as possible for immigrants who want to work to do so? As long as they pay taxes, who cares? A guest worker program might be a good idea, since if there's a offically sanctioned way to get work that doesn't involve risking your life swimming the Rio Grande, then people will probably be willing to compete for a chance to take part. Everyone wins in that scenario. I just read about some primate studies where it was observed that new members of a group, when welcomed into "society", quickly adapted to the new group's social standards. This in contrast to say, Germany or France, where guest workers (Eastern Europeans, Turks, Africans) have had a hard time assimilating, arguably because the natives weren't too welcoming or just kept to themselves.

Nothin' like a little butt-rape to bring out our pal Fairweather.

The amount of gay content on cc.com has declined noticeably since Dwayner and Pope left. Maybe "*" just doesn't come up. There have been, how many, one or two black people to offend around here? Use of "Republican" has declined since they all left for assendscionist.com or after the last of their brains leaked out while watching FOX. "Wanker" has to be the most-used epithet, probably because pretty much all of us like to wank about climbing on the Intraweb.

You should post the movie footage so we can all edit it and add our own soundtracks. Imagine combining the best attributes of "Chevy Apprentice," those "Caption please" threads, and Das Toof. The result: a new standard in cc.com wankery.

Carry 'em around, put a pinch between cheek and gum every now and then. You can also sprinkle some grounds in your blue bags to improve the aroma.

I've got a demitasse (espresso-shot-sized cup) with my GSI coffee maker that fits right under the spout. Beware trying to fit a wider cup in there, though. While brewing a second shot into a regular metal mug, the whole thing tipped over as the last of the coffee squirted into the cup. Argh!

Go climb every gully on Abiel Peak and write a TR calling your enchainment "Fuck You Uncle Sam".

Wow, looks like I gotta make a trip to Oly to "visit my girlfriend's family" soon!

I've used a 42L pack to climb Rainier in two days, dunno how much it weighed. This was with ice tools, pickets, and screws.

I think we just needed to turn right instead of left where the McClellan Butte trail reaches the second road. That way, you actually meet Alice Creek.

Those boots look like the old Merrell Supercomps I used to have.

I have narrow feet and the Trango S (not GTX). Not waterproof or waterproofable, really, but I had no blisters after an alpine trip with 5/7 days of rain. I don't think they'll be nearly as durable as most leathers, but they are light and pretty comfortable.
