  1. A friend and I did a little climbing at Tum Tum last week, including a pitch that wasn't in our guidebook (by Jim Speaker). It's just around the corner from You Name It, starts with some jams under a flake (~5.9), and has shiny new bolts the rest of the way. Anyone know what it's called? I talked to a guy at Mtn Goat who was surprised to hear about the route, since it implies that someone's been doing some development there. He said the owners of the nearby land aren't too keen on climbers and that the four-star classic dihedral I saw in Speaker's guide, for example, is now off-limits. From the No Trespassing signs we saw, an awful lot of rock is a no-go. What's the deal? Had a good time on what little we did climb.
  2. Not hard. There are many kinds of wiki, some as easy to set up as unzipping a file and filling out a few form fields. You could do it yourself if you have a web server and 30 minutes. The hard part is spending the time to organize things in a meaningful way and getting people to use it.
  3. Dr. Michael Smith, veterinarian.
  4. I was in Portland last week and think I saw Mike Layton at a Japanese restaurant on a date. Now, I only recognize the guy from photos and a cc.com sausagefest or two, but he had that desperate look in his eye that could only come from an alpinist hard-up for some soft female attention. Did he send? Was the pro good? We may never know. Ever the reticent hardman, Mr. Layton's publicist could not be reached for comment.
  5. After ripping off the tape, there was a good deal of glue left on the rubber. Tape really is aid.
  6. Good on ya. Now that you're a bike-riding hippie, just bring some patchouli oil to enhance your natural scent after the ride.
  7. I relaced my Mythos the other day with 2mm cord. Got it done quickly with the help of a tiny flathead screwdriver, the kind you use to fix your glasses. The sharp, small edge helps push the end of the lace through the leather passageways. I also picked up a free blown bike tube from the REI bike shop, to cut up and glue over the toe eyelets to reduce the wear on the laces there.
  8. And tingles going down, like Drano.
  9. At Smith last weekend, I saw a girl fill a water bottle from the river. She showed up where we were climbing and I told her nicely that I'd heard the river was seriously polluted. For a moment, I got the deer-in-the-headlights look, then she said, "Oh, it's just for our dogs." C'mon now, friends don't let friends drink from the Crooked River. All the chemicals on all the fields for miles around get washed into it. Maybe folks working on the trails project this weekend should put up a few signs.
  10. Any raptor closures? Thinking about going there this weekend.
  11. Uh, do you think they ever leave the computer? Duh.
  12. I found The Source this weekend. These dudes were putting on a clinic. Sprayin' hard in Spray, Oregon. Jon, Tim, Oly: you guys need to colocate a server here.

  16. Ouch! At least now you get to learn how to do everything lefty. Hope you recover quickly.
  17. Glad Ben wasn't involved. Thanks for the update, Gary.
  18. My God, Klenke, what are you doing there? I don't see any brush at all. Beautiful!
  19. Submit a spatial plot of your sexual experiences with your resume. Must like dogs.
  20. My girlfriend's going to be out of town for two weeks and I'd like to get away while I have few obligations. Camp out somewhere at night, climb when I can, work in Starbucks when I can't--that's the idea. I'll definitely be in Leavenworth for a few days late next week, then maybe Smith for the latter half of my "working vacation" . My mom is in PDX, so I'll probably be stopping there for a bit, too, perhaps on the way to Smith. Hell, I'll go pretty much anywhere I can camp, work, and climb in the sun. If anyone wants a partner for cragging, alpine, or skiing from April 26 through May 9, PM me. I'm looking for ideas on where to stash my stuff in 11worth or the Bend area, since I don't feel comfortable leaving my laptop in the back of the car. Perhaps a gym where I can get a locker? I would happily compensate any kind local who gives me a key to their backyard shed for a week. Also, any good places to get WiFi in Leavenworth, Bend, Yakima, US2/Index/Monroe?
  21. A UH-1 responded to an accident at Vantage a couple years ago. I assume it belonged to this MAST unit. Too bad they're leaving. NCNP uses private contractors and is also assisted by Coast Guard and Navy helicopters, I think. I don't know if the Army gets involved very often, since other assets are probably closer to the park.
  22. Holy smokes! Did you guys hear about those Alien cams breaking? Read all about it here: http://www.northwestclimbers.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=11

    Sympathy Pains

I find using a headset helps with phone-sex-related back problems. I don't drop the phone at the wrong moment now, either.
  24. Achtung! Just make sure ze braunshirt can be tucked into ze slacks, which are to be tucked into ze jackboots. Sonst wird bestraft.
  25. I saw a Mountie wearing what looked like a wetsuit with kneepads at Vantage last weekend. Aid climbing class, I think.
