  1. well, on that logic, you must consider alpine climbing a fat lazy man's sport, too.
  2. they are both nice beacons. my coworker and i played around with both of them in a park one day, and i personally liked the barryvox better. my search times with it were faster, and i found it less confusing to search with. my coworker was less opinionated about the choice.
  3. hey jdog, i bought the tele touring set-up and ice tools and crampons, but i'm still hesitating on a pair of at bindings, some fat skis, and new downhill boots ... and you forgot the snowboarding gear! but here's my problem: i have a job that lasts until the ski season ends. which translates to having some money now ... and - more importantly - not knowing if i'll have any money later. i'm not going to go out and buy a full aid rack, although it sure would be nice if i could afford to do just that. i was just curious what more seasoned wall climbers' opinions were on getting started. i did a wall this summer so i know what personal gear i need (and want), but it sure makes it difficult to find climbing partners when you also need them to provide your half of the gear. thanks to everybody for their two cents (and then some)! i'm really looking forward to doing more walls next year!!!
  4. i'm thinking about starting to accumulate an aid rack. just curious what pieces some of you might think i should collect first. i want to do more walls in yosemite and i prefer ascents on the speedier side to lengthier party-style ones.
  5. that's some pretty interesting data. i'd actually never heard of this device before, but the concept seems to make sense. looks like it came in handy for quite a few people who had the misfortune to use it.
  6. umm ... what exactly is that?
  7. what's wrong with dirtbags?
  8. hey, if cat crap's what you want, i'll sell you 5 pounds for $1.00 plus shipping.
  9. not nice to talk about your friends like that!
  10. i've skiied in utah. i didn't come here not knowing what the skiing is like there, but then again i'm not claiming the snow or the skiing is the best here (in colorado) compared to anywhere else. i'd never skiied here before so i thought i'd give it a chance. that and - more importantly - the job offer here was way better than the one i got at alta. believe me, i REALLY wanted to live at alta for a winter. and believe me again when i say i REALLY miss the skiing in the northwest. but that doesn't mean i'm not going to enjoy what i've got here and make the most of it. i actually haven't been to an area where i thought the skiing really sucked. i like to ski (PERIOD!), and i'll ski whatever i can get my sticks on.
  11. that's old news. we all know it's happening. (don't we?) i can definitely tell you the snow isn't here (in colorado) right now. there is very little terrain open at telluride and i've been bored off of my ass skiing ... so i've had to resort to trying something new - knuckledragging.
  12. very funny, you guys. i'll have you know this has been a hotbed of discussion in the local paper's "letters to the editor" after some guy said he was NOT coming to telluride this year because of this. actually, nobody cares that he's not going to visit; it was more the other stuff he said. but anyway, i'll keep my eye out for some friendly guys who might be able to provide you a free place (and warm bed) to stay in while you're here. and you don't have to drive all the way to ouray for the HOT [springs] action. ps - they've been having this event at whistler since 1993 ... and it's *HUGE* there.
  13. won't hurt to ask. they definitely recommend appointments for boot work!
  14. hmm. well ... hot italian is sounding pretty good right about now.
  15. YIKES!!!
  16. that sucks. a skier died after suffocating in a tree well at crystal last year. ski wells are scary.
  17. sturtevant's is known for their boot fitting. unfortunately they can get super busy, so try going at an off time (as in not right after work when everybody else is going, too). they also have an offshoot discount store with used and older model stuff about a block and half (or two) away called ski mart.
  18. sweet!
  19. nothing but here in telluride today.
  20. heard of ginuwine, but can't say i know the rest. sounds like some good shizzle. send it over my way if you want.
  21. sage cattabriga-alosa does big mountain jibbing. you could see that in the new tgr movie. although ... he doesn't do it with fritschi freerides.
  22. i don't get why people's goggles fog up so much. the only time i have a problem with mine is when i cover up the bottom vents (like with a neck gaiter pulled up over my nose - oops!) or when i'm hiking too hard. why do goggles fog up anyway? besides if there's no ventilation? i want the real scientific explanation, you nerds.
  23. hey iceicebaby! i've used the rambocomps and i loved them ... except for when i was trying to walk around on the coleman glacier. talk about sketchball! but that's why i'm looking at crampons that have more/bigger rear points. (btw, when i was looking at tools, i was considering the quarks and the top machines. i went with the top machines. nicer shafts if you ask me. )
