Renting a car is a good way to travel, when leaving a city. Maybe spend some time in a city on foot, there is usually really good public transportation, and you can get an idea how people drive before jumping into the mess. Paris you could spend a lot of time just in the city, sometimes there are city passes you can get where you can go and see a lot of turonsites at a reduced price. In Paris I wouldnt even dream of renting a car while in town, you would miss a lot of the local life others have pointed out in previous posts and the drivers in Paris are CRAZY, and parking is beyond hellish. Rent the car on days leaving the city--From what I have seen a car is much more of a liabilty than it is here. I have only been to Northern Europe, for extended periods of time, and my favorites were Copenhagen, Amsterdam, Paris and Stockholm. Oh, get a plug adapter if he uses any electronics from the US, and take a backpack rather then a suitcase. TTT

Heard it on the radio while getting ready for work. Watched the first tower fall on TV-oh shit, at first on the radio it sounded like a cessna had hit it the way it was at first unconfirmed and reported. Was listening to the radio that had a guy live inside the Pentagon, and you could hear the boom and all the commotion in the background. I was on top of one of the towers a week and a half before, so it hit home. Those towers were bigger than they looked on TV. Made the first scheduled flight out of seatac a few days earlier, and talked to some that just got back from the Wonderland trail while in line, and they barely knew what happened. They said the first time they knew anything was wrong was while up in MRNP the planes stopped flying, and there was a silence. Talked to several on the plane that were forced to sleep outside after their plane was forced down in Seattle.

Jeez, take a look at the prices at the gas pump. I saw 2.19/gallon today for premium. Just two weeks ago at another station it was only 1.35 for regular. Whos making all the money? reminds me of the days of Enron. Whats the most expensive anyone has seen out there? These long drives to the back country on weekends are going to get really expensive--the guy working at the station said "there is no end in sight for how high the prices may go".

We were in the area too, and Thunder Creek area looked full of smoke. We also saw a small fire near where we were at about mile 14 above the Cascade river road (south), and the next day (Sunday) it was still smoldering, and all those damn helocopters all day, well for good reason.

I work for a mortgage company ( not a broker) and the talk is that they will be level or going up. The market has already anticipated a drop of a quarter, so they are theoretically factored in. Mortgage brokers that post here are probably too busy to post anything right now. TTT
