The solution is to meet your girlfriend while climbing. Cuts out a lot of that pre climb fighting and post climb silence. TTT

yeah this is the part that scares me...someone w/no international experience making these decisions The part that scares me is it isn't REALLY GWB who is making the decisions, rather he almost reports them after they happen.

To_The_Top replied to JoshK's topic in Climber's Board
Hahaha.... if we make enough cash, we could set up in the crater on Rainier.... (wow, i think i'm taking this too far......) I have taken Rainier beer to the top many times and tried to get those gung-ho at Muir to drink it at the summit for photo-ops and have had few takers.... It tastes better at 4K than at 14K I would take beer to the summit of any mountian if it got drunk at the top. TTT -

I got there relatively early - 7ish, so I caught the gaper show on the way down. It wasn't just the plastics and giant packs some of these folks had, but full alpine regalia complete with helmets, ice axes, and one dude with - I shit you not - wands!! .. but hey, if I wasn't such a gaper myself I would have been somewhere other than si. LOL...man, Si cracks me up. It's always good for a laugh. I ran up last week during the pouring rain and saw all sorts of madness. One guy had these giant ass 36" alaskan powder style snowshoes strapped to his pack. I guess he needed them for the 6" of slush up on the summit! Worked! Supposed to be unemployed. People on Si crack me up....Me fanny pack-them big back pack-"Hey you dont have the __ essentials" Last time up a few weeks ago it was many plastics on parade. . I say instead of carrying water up there carry beer (in cans). -
Do you mean shooting cracks as you were walking on it, meaning they opened across the slope that as you were on it(run the other way!) or cracks in the snow that were already there? Joshk, where is shot 8? Which side of Alpental? TTT

It may stink that there are no updates at this time of the year because, well not very many people go up in winter. The route is up to you, and maybe post a trip report after you do it. Like CBS said look at trip reports in the Rainier section. There is little beta at this time of the year because you will make the beta, and be careful. Glad to see that you check the sites already and I realized that there are no updates on the route but at the MRNP site does give you insight on what to prepare for, everything on how to register to what to prepare for. If you want to know how to get ahold of someone that is up there alot, pm me. TTT

The Ingraham Direct would be the way to go, or Gibraltar Ledges route might be a go. I would think the DC would not be in. It has snowed 4-7 feet since I was near that area a few weeks ago (I only went to Muir), and the DC would probably be out, but you can access the route above the cleaver. Dont underestimate the crevasse situtation because it is winter, the snow bridges may be dubious and you may not even know you are on one. The glacier moves all the time, so even though it has snowed it doesnt necessarily mean there are no or strong snow bridges. My only best peice of advice is to hook up with someone with good experiance on glacier travel (unless you do) and pick a really good weather window as it gets really bad up there at this time of the year. This site updates every day on the conditions: weather on Rainier . Also expect to be alone on the mountain with no easy way up. Here is the local climbing reports put out by Mount Rainier National Park: MRNP climbing . I would plan on having backup plans at this time of the year, as previously mentioned about the avalanche forcasts check here: NWAC . TTT
