Gear abandoned on a route is trash and belongs to whomever carries it out. If you have to leave gear on a route, you made the choice to leave it behind and should not expect to give it back. If someone does give gear you abandoned back to you, a single beer or a "hey thanks" are pretty stingy. OTOH if I recover some gear that I know belongs to a friend I will usually return it to them.
