YocumRidge Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Nisqually Cleaver on Rainier has massively displaced itself when we climbed Nisqually Icefall and is out for the season. [video:vimeo]25645698 My sorry tent suffering volcanic fallout: Avy debris seen from N. Icefall: Quote
stevetimetravlr Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 sAwesome! Wheres the Nisqually Icefall pics?! ya mon! Quote
KaskadskyjKozak Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Cats must be jealous: they only have nine lives. :-) Quote
YocumRidge Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 Ha, V, you should have totally come and brought more screws - ice was calling you! Quote
spionin Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 hmm... i'm pretty sure from your pictures, and the recent entry in the rainier climbing blog that the ice was set to "kill" mode this weekend. Quote
YocumRidge Posted June 27, 2011 Author Posted June 27, 2011 Yeah, too much excitement to be had for sure. Once the slides begun, the geologists could not even get to and retrieve the sensor set up on Nisqually in between Cowlitz and Nisqually cleavers. Quote
Devin27 Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 We were at Camp Muir preparing dinner and ropes for the next days ascent when the ice fall happened. The whole camp was covered in dust from the cloud it caused. I'm still cleaning dust off my gear. Nice photos, great vantage point Quote
ScaredSilly Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 Similar avalanche in the Alps but with severe consequences: http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/europe/06/26/france.alps.bodies/index.html?hpt=hp_bn2 Quote
To_The_Top Posted June 27, 2011 Posted June 27, 2011 That had a BIG run out, there were a couple of smaller slides on Sunday that rumbled through. Quote
TurinTheLost Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 This was by far the most impressive thing I have ever seen on the mountain! Seeing and feeling that amount of force so close was out of this world! It was fun climbing with you Mito! Quote

cbcbd Posted June 29, 2011 Posted June 29, 2011 Incredible video! We also saw a big brown cloud from rock/ice fall at the Nisqually cleaver around noon on Monday. Pretty dangerous weekend. Mito, did you guys climb the icefall after seeing this rock/ice fall? Quote
YocumRidge Posted June 29, 2011 Author Posted June 29, 2011 Yeah, the slide activity continued through Monday. There is more on this in the Seattle Times: http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2015453613_rainier29m.html Yes, we climbed a part of the N. Icefall next morning before the sun hit the cleaver - the only time window the slides subsided but oh man crossing that avy path was tough, cuz I really suck at sprint hurdling Quote
genepires Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 saw your video on the morning news, channel 2. the news folk think we are crazy. Quote

Icefall next morning before the sun hit the cleaver - the only time window the slides subsided but oh man crossing that avy path was tough, cuz I really suck at sprint hurdling No matter how much I have tried in the past I have never seen a pattern in ice fall. One of the biggest seracs I saw fall happened overnight on Adams, where nothing collapsed during the middle of the previous sunny warm day. Looks like lots of debris kept falling off the cleaver during the weekend, with big events happening at different times during the day. I personally could never rationalize crossing under the Nisqually Cleaver/Ice fall after it saw (and personally seeing) a series of the biggest rock/ice fall events in a long time. Looks like you guys have some serious higher power on your side. Quote
YocumRidge Posted June 30, 2011 Author Posted June 30, 2011 saw your video on the morning news, channel 2. the news folk think we are crazy. Weird, we did not give permission to the channel 2 on the video release. Do you have the link, Gene, by chance? Or the channel 2 is the Weather channel in Seattle (which we did give the permission to)? Quote
OlympicMtnBoy Posted June 30, 2011 Posted June 30, 2011 For me channel 2 is Northwest Cable News which is also affiliated with Channel 5 (KING). Quote
genepires Posted July 1, 2011 Posted July 1, 2011 it was northwest cable news. if it is on you tube, isn't it free game for anyone to use? (I have no real clue about those things) Quote
