Women will now need to register for the draft. It will be interesting to see whether that has any effect on how carefully we consider going to war. Of course, without an actual draft, the effect may be nada.

It hasn't been, um, too careful of late.

The draft is an interesting civil rights issue. On one hand, should the state force citizens to kill, and thus violate a basic moral tenet? On the other, and all volunteer force means a true cross section of the population doesn't get to loose their sons and daughters - so why speak up when shitheel projects like Iraq happens? Principles versus practical result. Hmmmmm.

DOD was on it's way to making this decision with or w/o the lawyers involvement. Personally I'm not so hot to go on the front line with my sistas.

Not really: NYT

"It was unclear why the Joint Chiefs acted now after examining the issue for years, although in recent months there has been building pressure from high-profile lawsuits.

In November 2012 the American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal lawsuit challenging the ban on behalf of four service women and the Service Women’s Action Network, a group that works for equality in the military. The A.C.L.U. said that one of the plaintiffs, Maj. Mary Jennings Hegar, an Air National Guard helicopter pilot, was shot down, returned fire and was wounded while on the ground in Afghanistan, but could not seek combat leadership positions because the Defense Department did not officially acknowledge her experience as combat."

The decision does appear to have come from the military itself, still smarting, no doubt, from losing the uber expensive and embarrassing Witt lawsuit, which was won by the ACLU of WA. Uh huh, cuz that's how we roll.

Considering that women have already been serving in combat positions for years now. A lawsuit's like a sip of strong coffee and a puff in the morning - it tends to move things along a bit faster.

DADT was probably on its way out, too, but it could have lingered for years and years without the Witt case. It's all just part of holding the government accountable to the rule of law. Keeps those retards from eating their own poo as often as they are wont.

Soldiers weren't so hot on serving with blacks, either, but things turned out OK. The one thing you can count on in this world is change. Some adapt well to it, others not so much. The first group tends to do better in the long run.
