tvashtarkatena Posted October 1, 2012 Share Posted October 1, 2012 (edited) Apollo was incredible, inspirational, and a product of a different era. given the choice of camping on Mars v flyby, orbital, surface and subsurface robotic missions to nearly every body in our solar system (the latter still the cheaper option), anyone truly interested in discovery would go with the robots. machines will be smarter than humans across the board within a decade, with the possible exceptions of fingerpainting and jokes, without all the piss, shit, moods, and sketchy judgement of hairless monkeys. Â some astronauts did help design their missions...on the ground, not in space ( A 13 excepted, perhaps). after launch, they did nothing that couldnt b done much more reliably, comprehensively, and cheaply by tinker toys. rob Posted October 8, 2012 Share Posted October 8, 2012 Computers win, again!  Approximately one minute and 19 seconds into last night’s launch, the Falcon 9 rocket detected an anomaly on one first stage engine. Initial data suggests that one of the rocket’s nine Merlin engines, Engine 1, lost pressure suddenly and an engine shutdown command was issued immediately. We know the engine did not explode, because we continued to receive data from it. Our review indicates that the fairing that protects the engine from aerodynamic loads ruptured due to the engine pressure release, and that none of Falcon 9’s other eight engines were impacted by this event. As designed, the flight computer then recomputed a new ascent profile in real time to ensure Dragon’s entry into orbit for subsequent rendezvous and berthing with the ISS. Â Go full auto and you won't need more than two lanes going anywhere ever again. Â Cars that break down will need to self destruct after an appropriately brief warning period to the passengers of say, 30 seconds or so. Here's where an orbiting particle beam weapon would come in handy. Alternatively, they could flip on their sides to allow traffic could squeeze past. Hell, other vehicles could even be commanded to push them off bridges. Â The future looks interesting indeed.
