Space exploration is like a car factory, robots do it better.

I don't think so, there is a huge difference between producing something and designing something. Machines don't design cars, people do.

which is better to explore the depths of far europa's oceans though? if the difference in price is a factor of 10? of 100?

if queen isabella could have sent a probe instead of columbus, what would she have done? would the outcome have been any different, regardless?

Apollo was incredible, inspirational, and a product of a different era. given the choice of camping on Mars v flyby, orbital, surface and subsurface robotic missions to nearly every body in our solar system (the latter still the cheaper option), anyone truly interested in discovery would go with the robots. machines will be smarter than humans across the board within a decade, with the possible exceptions of fingerpainting and jokes, without all the piss, shit, moods, and sketchy judgement of hairless monkeys.

some astronauts did help design their missions...on the ground, not in space ( A 13 excepted, perhaps). after launch, they did nothing that couldnt b done much more reliably, comprehensively, and cheaply by tinker toys.

Ground control to Major Tvash: Planet Earth is through. But there's something you can do. Advise activation NCSA HAL-phone 5 and procede to Europa urgently. Re: floating rugrat, that fkn fkr.

P.S. If it's not too much to ask, can you beam up Dumb-bone and Dill Doe and take them with you?

Computers win, again!

Approximately one minute and 19 seconds into last night’s launch, the Falcon 9 rocket detected an anomaly on one first stage engine. Initial data suggests that one of the rocket’s nine Merlin engines, Engine 1, lost pressure suddenly and an engine shutdown command was issued immediately. We know the engine did not explode, because we continued to receive data from it. Our review indicates that the fairing that protects the engine from aerodynamic loads ruptured due to the engine pressure release, and that none of Falcon 9’s other eight engines were impacted by this event.

As designed, the flight computer then recomputed a new ascent profile in real time to ensure Dragon’s entry into orbit for subsequent rendezvous and berthing with the ISS. This was achieved, and there was no effect on Dragon or the cargo resupply mission.

From sending your 7 year old to the store for cigarettes to getting shitfaced on the drive home from an outing: WANT.

I'm thinking in 20 years full auto will be commonplace.

Fuck sign pollution.

Fuck stupid agro fat guys with goatees in roided out pickups.

Fuck herbal tea sipping left lane blockers.

Fuck auto insurance.

Fuck, fuck da Po lice.

FUCK YEAH.

This is one area where the Gubmint should be shelling out some X prize money rather than building more roads that haven't a prayer of solving anyone's traffic problems.

Go full auto and you won't need more than two lanes going anywhere ever again.

Cars that break down will need to self destruct after an appropriately brief warning period to the passengers of say, 30 seconds or so. Here's where an orbiting particle beam weapon would come in handy. Alternatively, they could flip on their sides to allow traffic could squeeze past. Hell, other vehicles could even be commanded to push them off bridges.

The future looks interesting indeed.
