Layback Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Definition seems elusive. Grade IV+ and not a ridge??? Not sure really. Quote

Buckaroo Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Any wall that takes more than a day to climb by an average climber. Â Any wall that requires a bivy on the wall. Quote
kevbone Posted May 24, 2011 Author Posted May 24, 2011 Any wall that takes more than a day to climb by an average climber.  I like this definition  Any wall that requires a bivy on the wall.  This needs "by an average climber" to be accurate IMO  Guys who climb El Cap in under 24 hours or for that matter in 5 hours really take the definition of big wall and throw it out the window. Off_White Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 Any wall you frame with a stud longer than 10'. Â Â Â Haven't they covered this topic pretty well on rockclimbing.com? Quote
AlpineK Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 No need to travel the globe. You can build your own big wall [img:center]http://us.123rf.com/400wm/400/400/baloncici/baloncici0812/baloncici081200139/4041813-big-wall-made-from-curved-grey-stones.jpg[/img] Â Quote

builder206 Posted May 24, 2011 Posted May 24, 2011 (edited) Any climb where the weight of the water you have to haul is greater than the weight of all your other gear?  Someone who does big wall climbing told me that in summer in some places, each pair's haul bag will be 175 lbs with more than half that being water. Water weights 8.3 lbs per gallon so that represents more than 5-1/2 gallons per person. If you use 1-1/2 gals. per day that's almost 4 days' worth. Long time to be on a route.  P.S. an aid route, not free  Edited May 24, 2011 by builder206 Quote
