Dan_Harris Posted January 15, 2002 Posted January 15, 2002 I heard a radio ad today that used strange place names of real places, like Deadhorse, AK. It got me to thinking about other strange names. Here in CA some do not seem strange until you translate to english, like Manteca (Lard) and Maricopa (Moth). Any others out there? I live in Exit. [ 01-14-2002: Message edited by: Dan Harris ] Quote
sobo Posted January 15, 2002 Posted January 15, 2002 Howz about Walla Walla, Washington? (Water water, as I understand it, from the language of some local, early, indigenous inhabitants). It also means: Home of the State's worst (convicted) criminal offenders. This meaning, of course, presupposes the membership of this group. Quote

ScottP Posted January 15, 2002 Posted January 15, 2002 Not a place name per se, but: There's a "Brown Material Road" between McKittrick and Blackwell's Corner in CA. Quote

JRCO Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 I can't believe no one has mentioned "Humptullips, WA" Quote
payaso Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 I always liked the combination of "Mexicali" on the Mexican side, and "Calexico" on the US Border. Very clever. [ 01-16-2002: Message edited by: payaso ] Quote
payaso Posted January 16, 2002 Posted January 16, 2002 Another real good one is Northwest of Las Vegas on the way to Death Valley, called "Pahrump!" What a shithole! Cheap land though and you'd be somewhat close to Red Rocks!?!? [ 01-16-2002: Message edited by: payaso ] Quote
