...just to keep up with state and local taxes! (And those fucking red light camera fines you do-gooders foisted upon us.)

The red light camera thing sprung forth from the law and order(Nixon)/zero tolerance(Reagan)/surveillance(Bush) culture like so much explosive diarrhea; you're just failing to celebrate your own political victories. Furthermore, they reduce taxes by providing other revenue streams for the state; ditto on my first comment.

Don't like surveillance cameras? Don't run any red lights. Or join the ACLU and actually do something about it. Or continue whining to a smirking online audience. Your choice.

That's rich coming from a thug that cheered on Bush while he was busy forcing upon us his liberticidal policies, including snooping on communications, no fly lists, etc ...

I can tell you've probably never experienced the joy of writing a check to your county treasurer for several thousand dollars for nothing more than the privilege of living in the home you worked so hard to own for another twelve months. It wouldn't be so bad, but for punks like you who have the audacity to then tell me it's not enough.

The real estate tax rates are pretty reasonable in Seattle:

There's two rates:

One for downtown & near north (Belltown/Queen Anne)

10.82722 per thousand.

On a "low" priced building assessed at 400K = $4330.88

The rest of the city is more reasonable:

8.68790 per thousand.

On the same 400K = $3475.16

Especially considering there is no income tax rate - the taxes here are not a burden. Unless you are in the lower income brackets and then are acutely aware of our regressive sales tax. Taxes and death; nothing is free. Get used to it.

$11.62 in Tacoma. That makes your $400k home come it at $4,648 down here. Now we have school districts running off-cycle bond elections and, of course, threats to shut down parks. Like I said in my post--if you bothered to read the disclaimer--I don't mind the taxes so much as the ungrateful and entitlement attitude put forth by the likes of Prole, j_b, and you. How much will be enough?

1 - We're talking local politics here TTK. Try to keep up.

2 - Do you honestly believe one dime of these fines reduce taxes?

3 - 85% of the red light fines are for passing the stop bar on a free right turn. Municipalities have shortened the yellow-light timers from 4 seconds to 3.5, or, in some cases, 3 seconds. Cha Ching.

irony is generally lost on conservatives, which no doubt explains their tendency towards fundementalism as well

Policies Obama has continued without exception. (Where is your outrage, Comrade Tool!) Do you really think keeping people who are associated with bombs off of airplanes is a bad idea? You're delusional. Ivan too.

if that's actually what it did, sure - how many actual bad-guys have the no-fly lists caught? goose-egg.

how many old ladies and 2 year old's w/ the same name as half the rest of the planet has it bothered - a lot more.

the no-fly list is just meant to make people feel safer, not to actually make them safer.

the no-fly thing is hardly the most eggregious of privacy-violations foisted upon us since 9/11.

LOL are there 500,000 people (number of people on no-fly list) associated with bombs on airplane? just because their name is similar to that of some wacko or because they are anti-war activists?

You are a dangerous liberticidal phony who always gargles about 'freedom'

I'm referring to the Technology and Liberty Project of the Washington State chapter, which monitors and acts on the use of surveillance cameras, such as Medina's new license plate cameras, among a host of other surveillance issues, all of them local to WA. Or WSDOTs extensive highway camera system, which can and does track the movement of individual license plates. Currently, this information is used only for traffic loading analysis, but one subpoena could change that right quick if proper safeguards aren't put into place.

Might I suggest becoming more educated on the issues you care about most?

jeebus, should israel lighten their flight security? this doesn't speak about my feelings regarding our (or israel's) FP, but i do believe that the life of innocent amerkens (and amerbarbies hah) need protecting (an israeli security specialist laughed at our measures, calling them wholly inadequate, and we moan cuz we get "inconvenienced" at the airport. sheeit, we don't know what inconveniencing is all about).

Nation states have a right to control their borders. Part of that whole Westphalian thing you despise so much. Maybe we should just get rid of the metal detectors too?

But seemingly no problem whatever with tax cuts for the rich or policies that facilitate loopholes, shelters, offshoring, relocation, and the rest. Honestly FW, have you been asleep for the last twenty years or what?

How much will be enough?

As your statement about parks and schools makes clear, it's not really even about more anymore. It's about trying to hold on to the little we've got left. Please get a clue. Spoon-feeding you lessons on recent history is becoming tiresome.

Strawman for I didn't say that air travel security measures were unnecessary, but how is targeting democratic opponents of government policies increasing our security? How is making a huge no fly list of ~500,000 names, instead of targeting terrorists, increasing our security?

sir, i do believe there are elements in our current approach that need review.

i wished simply to make sure that you weren't in favor of allowing hand-guns and osama bin laden on airplanes, without the necessary back-ground checks.

i am quite sure i was not erecting a straw-man, no matter how it may have appeared to you, sir.

You don't want to give any money to me; it'll go right into some crack ho's faux Louis Vuitton.

Go to ACLU of Washington . There's a 'donate' link and 'legislative action network' link on the home page. Our legislative action network is arguably the best in the state.

We are one of 4 state chapters nationwide to have staffed, funded Technology and Liberty Projects. National has one too.

The surveillance camera issue is already huge, and growing. Britain has half a million such cameras already, and we're following suite. It is, however, only one aspect of the total surveillance society we're creating. It's not just the State, either. Sprint is making money selling customer information to law enforcement. ATT has huge contracts with the NSA to filter all of our fibre communications, which is pretty much all of our communications. We're the heavy hitter against all this shit, although we work with other organizations as well.

If you care about taxes, and I share that concern, then you must care about where tax money goes. Let's talk criminal justice system and War on Drugs. Yeah, that's one expensive publicly funded toy. We're also working on reclassifying pot as a misdemeanor as a first step towards building down this incredibly bloated system to more reasonable levels and restoring and reducing the human cost of such policies.

That, and a bunch of other stuff you probably would find interesting, even if you don't agree with all of it.

Nation states don't have any right to restrict the travels (or it's mode) of law abiding citizens. These are the kind of moments when all your rhetoric about freedom and constitution is shown to be a hollow veneer that conveniently hides your authoritarian outlook.

I'd still say the overall package is reasonable. That said - there has been an increased tax burden over the past 25 years on the individual vs. the corporate entity. Combine this with the restrictions placed on state and local governments regarding Tim Eyman's wako-ness and there is little wiggle room. The idea that there is some bloated bureaucracy living off the public dole is baseless. Spend any time with federal, state, or local employees these days and you will quickly understand what they are up against. They are stuck in a difficult place - and floating bond measures, as unpalatable as it is during a recession, seems to be the only choice. Unless of course you don't mind 50 kids per classroom, parks closed, and services curtailed. It's a big hole and one that has been dug over a couple decades. Foreign adventures, unprescedented flow of capital to the upper class, and reducing of corporate taxes - that's were our money has gone.
