Jens Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Anyone care to reveal personal favorite food joints in your neighborhood that are amazing? I'm talking hole in the wall places that fly under the radar. On the other side of the coin, any places that get all the hype, yet plain suck bad and are riding on name alone? A chef I met once told me that the LeGourmand (spelling?) the small brick place about 10 blocks east of the Ballard Safeway was hands down the finest food to be consumed in the State of Washington. ------------------------- Quote
G-spotter Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 The Mountain Hardware Cafeteria. The more you eat there the less you'll have to leave biners behind on hard redpoints, Jens. Quote
TrogdortheBurninator Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 everest kitchen (indian, tibetan, nepalese) in lake city = good Quote
mec Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Cocina Esperanza at the end of NW 85th above golden gardens. Small place, great food. Quote
mkporwit Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 Hmmm, where to start? Cafe Senor Moose in Ballard for very good, authentic Mexican sit-down food. Naan-n-Curry in Renton for good Indian/Pakistani Yea's Wok in Newcastle for great Sichuan Quote
NTM Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 I've really liked La Isla on 24th and Market in Ballard. The Dish for breakfast food on Leary. Quote
mkporwit Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 I've really liked La Isla on 24th and Market in Ballard. tasty Quote
dt_3pin Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 I'm a bit of a taco truck connoisseur, and the one at Home Depot on Aurora is outrageously good. Fresh tamales on the weekends. Quote
NTM Posted September 18, 2008 Posted September 18, 2008 The food at Maritime is pretty good too. I dig the L'il Mahis. the isn't half bad either Quote
sobo Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 The taco bus at the corner of Clearwater and Morain in Kennewick for awesome tamales and tacos. And Pho King for Vietnamese over in Pasco. Their slogan is classic: "It's PhoKing good!" Quote
Toast Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 I'm a bit of a taco truck connoisseur, and the one at Home Depot on Aurora is outrageously good. Fresh tamales on the weekends. Those tamales are the real thing, gelatinous, wrapped in banana leaf and tasty. Close as you'll find to the tamales sold on the street in the Yucatan. Yummm. Quote
Toast Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 By the way, on the Haute Food train, How to Cook a Wolf on the top of Queen Anne rocks. A little pricey, but it's a nice treat for a date. The wood panelling is impressive too. Quote
mkporwit Posted September 19, 2008 Posted September 19, 2008 If you happen to see an airstream trailer with the logo of a cast-iron skillet on the side of it, stop by and get some food -- these guys rock Quote

A chef I met once told me that the LeGourmand (spelling?) the small brick place about 10 blocks east of the Ballard Safeway was hands down the finest food to be consumed in the State of Washington. ------------------------- Le Gourmand is one of my favorites, very nice place to go for cocktails and appies. They are always coming up with some tasty champange cocktails. The chef makes some really good fois gras and the duck with currant reduction was one of my favorite meals I have had anywhere. I haven't been there for a few years, but really want to go back. The Dish rocks for breakfast. The Oxancan mexican resturant in Ballard has really good mexican food. I love sandwhiches and for the price Fred Myers does an excellent job. Usually it is good for two meals for me. I forget the name but there is a french bistro that is right around the corner from the market that has lunch fare that is just like you would find in Paris nice soups, simple sandwhich with quality ingredients I have never had tamales outside of my kitchen or mexico that are good, but who know maybe some of these trucks can make some good tamales. I am right now getting really into the Bangladeshi food, it is super hot like indian food on steroids. Right now it is Ramadam, so people are fasting during the day and gorging at night. Iftar's are soo good and meal in itself though for everybody it is just the appetizer. The other day we got this firey hot 7 Dhal sauce with marrow that was so rocking. Quote
fenderfour Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 Paseo's in Fremont rocks my world. They do Cuban sandwiches. They don't have a sign. Look for a small storefront covered in corrugated metal. 4225 Fremont Ave N El Chupacabra makes the mission style burritos that Taco Del Mar wishes they made. Not to mention excellent gringo enchiladas and a passable house margarita. Quote
Couloir Posted September 22, 2008 Posted September 22, 2008 In Portland, I just went to a place called Pine State Biscuits on SE Belmont. The best biscuits I have ever had. And the signature sandwich is out of control...it's called a Reggie Deluxe: Fried chicken, bacon, egg, cheese in a biscuit, covered in gravy. Quote

Sambar is a very cool spot. Quote

Naan-n-Curry in Renton for good Indian/Pakistani Yea's Wok in Newcastle for great Sichuan Yea's Wok is really good. I'll have to try the other two. Quote
Hugh Conway Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 The Gyro place in Lake City is damn good and cheap. Quote
ClipStick Posted September 30, 2008 Posted September 30, 2008 Jolly Roger Tap room....ie..the Maritime Brewery tasting room, has great stuff, located under the bridge on 15th in Ballard...my favorite of all places...try the Lil' Mahi burgers... They have become a bit trendy and busy in the last couple years, so don't mind the crowd so much... Quote
Couloir Posted October 2, 2008 Posted October 2, 2008 I've always been on the lookout for a great breakfast burrito and I have finally found one. Ole Ole on E. Burnside in Portland, just a few blocks beyond the Sandy intersection. If you know of others, list 'em! Quote
