billcoe Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 The polls are wrong. Obama is taking this one. Quote
prole Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 I'd say Obama needs a double-digit lead heading into the election to make up for the racists that say they're going to vote for him and do something else when the curtain is closed. What that something is, I'll leave up to you. (I apologize in advance for any offense that the preceding statement may have caused, the views and opinions expressed here in no way represent the American Left, the Democratic Party, Barak Obama, secular humanism, or the Enlightenment). akhalteke Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 It looks to me like McCain is only on a temporary upswing. It does show that this is going to be a very very tight race. If I didn't hate the candidates so much, I would be excited to watch. Quote
olyclimber Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 it will be the most interesting election that i have voted in, thats for sure Quote
mattp Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 It gets amusing where the Democrats are running on family values and the Republicans on "change." Quote
akhalteke Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 It gets amusing where the Democrats are running on family values and the Republicans on "change." You mean, 'running against Go. Palin's family values?' Quote
Off_White Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 "Family Values" is almost always defined by what you're against. Quote
ivan Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 i wouldn't be suprised at all if we get another 2000 style debacle and the abject failure to fix the voting system and/or eliminate vote tampering is made embarassingly obvious to the whole world again Quote
mattp Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 I don't think it was "against" anything when Obama's kids were talking to him from the stage of the Democratic convention and it certainly wasn't "against Palin" as she hadn't even been announced. To the extent that your rhetorical comment had any substance, Alkatete, can you cite an example where any kind of spokseman from the Democratic party has slammed Palin for "family values," or is it just the cc.com spray elite and some late night comedians who have you all concerned? No. 13 Baby Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Its hard to fathom how anyone could support a VP candidate who isn't even allowed to speak with the media. [bTW, the correct lyric is: You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows.] Quote
Peter_Puget Posted September 8, 2008 Author Posted September 8, 2008 Hey #13 - The problem you have with being a smart ass is....you’re not so smart. The title was a specific reference to the SDS/Weatherman pamphlet with the misquote. Funny thing is despite Obama’s relationship to some of the old “weathermen” you didn’t get it. Might I suggest beauty school? Quote
eldiente Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 These polls are useless. The only thing that matters is the the state by state polls as we don't elect a president by popular vote. Looking at the State level, BO is doing OK, as he is up in every state that Kerry won and tied in several of the swing states. I have high hopes he'll take Colorado. Quote
mattp Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 That is probably a better way to look at polls, Eldiente, but no matter how you look at it I think we are probably in for another close election where the results may turn on events that sway public opinion but may or may not have to do with a consideration of which candidate will likely make a better president. If we see some scandal connected with Obama, for example, it may drive voters away from him whether it is real or manufactured or has anything to do with his abilities as a leader. If we get a health scare about McCain, whether or not it has real likelihood to affect his competence for the next four years, same thing. Everybody says international crisis favors McCain, but not if McCain is perceived as responding in a misguided fashion whereas Obama looks more "presidential," whatever that means. And then there is the nagging problem of voting "irregularities" that the Republican supporters scoff at. This will be an interesting election and, as much as I shouldn't say anything nice about the bad guys, even McCain/Palin is probably a shade better than Bush/Cheney. I hope this election is decided on "issues" not "values," and I hope that Americans start paying more attention to all of this. Quote
AlpineK Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 Every time a convention concludes the winning candidate of that party gets a boost in the polls. The repubs have just wrapped up their convention and guess what McCain is doing better in national polls. It's still tight and will remain so till it's time for everybody to fill in their favorite box on the election form. One thing of note is those polls cover, "likely voters." The selection of likely voter may not represent who actually shows up on election day. Quote
mattp Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 It is interesting, don't you think, that Palin drew more attention and more cheers at the convention than McCain, and that most people are saying that her selection gave McCain a big boost? If an idealogue from the right wing fringe is such a great choice for a candidate that was already war mongering and a social conservative, maybe Obama doesn't need to keep trying to jog center. He should be looking for a photo op with Naomi Klein. Quote
