layton Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 As of 8/01/08, all back country users (as defined as >1 hour from road) will be required to register with this service: http://www.safecheckin.com/safecheckin/index.php Quote
olyclimber Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 What if I decide to go to one of the "unsafe neighborhoods" here in Seattle? Will I be required to check in then??? OR WHAT IF I HAVE TO DRIVE INTO WORK FOR SOME REASON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111 Quote
ivan Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 guess that means you don't have to use your priest anymore mike? he ALWAYS came looking after 24 hours Quote
Dechristo Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 The new rule requires also the backcountry user to wear a combination GPS/shock collar. Quote
tradclimbguy Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Where does it say the NPS and USFS is requiring this? I couldn't find anything on it. If it's true it's absolutely stupid. Can you see all the boater's logging in to say they are going out on their boat for the day? Or the Day hikers just hitting up the trail head? How about that mother daughter that were murdered last year. How is something like that supposed to make you "safe"? Seems like a stupid knee-jerk idea that will do nothing but give people a false sense of security. Me, Ill stick with leaving my wife and friends our plans for when we do long off the beaten path trips. Quote
mountainmatt Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 To prevent this, I suggest that we start building more roads! Quote
ClimbingPanther Posted March 5, 2008 Posted March 5, 2008 Maybe layton is being mischevious? If so, I applaud the effort! Quote
111 Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 nothing about in the page's press release section. I CALL SHENANIGANS! Quote
hafilax Posted March 7, 2008 Posted March 7, 2008 Friends of mine were doing the Widowmaker Arete and left their car in the Grouse parking lot. Let's just say it took them a while and the police found the lonely car. Turns out the police, repeatedly called his cell (which was off), contacted his landlord and property manager to gain access to his house and searched for phone numbers of people to call and find out if everything was alright. THEY're looking out for whether you like it or not. Quote
