I had heard about some kind of chemical that was dangerous in Nalgene bottles, but never looked into it until now. Interesting article for all of you science or health gurus on this site.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can duplicate, block or exaggerate hormonal responses. "The most harm is to the unborn or newborn child," vom Saal says.

there is conclusive evidence to suggest that using your nally as a pee bottle neutralizes bpa.rinsing with cytomax is recommended.

an equal or greater hazard is that this stuff is common in baby bottles.....we just threw out about $60 worth after reading about similar research on potential effects on infants.

As far I know, the "leaching" of the chemicals varies according to the grade/type of plastic. Nalgene is pretty hard stuff and thus may leach less than say "Dasani" water bottles and such - which shouldn't be continuously reused because they degrade sooner and thus may leach more.

 

Plastic pollution overall though is fast becoming the next environmental catastrophe (behind GW) of our age. It may be one factor in causing some "male" Bass near D.C. to turn up with eggs in their sex organs. Suspended microscopic particles of plastic have been found in the most remote ocean waters and in sea life across the globe. If you eat fish, you probly ingesting micro-plastics as well.

Do any of you ever wash your Nalgene bottles in the dishwasher? If you do, I suggest that you stop the practice, and here's the reason. Many of the detergents used in dishwashers are formulated at alkaline pH. This tends to break down polycarbonate plastics and release Bisphenol A.

 

Phenols, in general, are poorly soluble in water at neutral and weakly acidic pH, but are much more soluble at alkaline pH.
