mythosgrl Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 http://www.thegreenguide.com/doc/114/bpa I had heard about some kind of chemical that was dangerous in Nalgene bottles, but never looked into it until now. Interesting article for all of you science or health gurus on this site. Quote
mythosgrl Posted October 26, 2007 Author Posted October 26, 2007 (edited) An excerpt from the article: you also may be swallowing residues of a controversial chemical called bisphenol A (BPA) that can leak out [of plastic water bottles] BPA mimics naturally occurring estrogen, a hormone that is part of the endocrine system, the body's finely tuned messaging service. "These hormones control the development of the brain, the reproductive system and many other systems in the developing fetus," says Frederick vom Saal, Ph.D., a developmental biologist at the University of Missouri. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals can duplicate, block or exaggerate hormonal responses. "The most harm is to the unborn or newborn child," vom Saal says. Edited October 26, 2007 by mythosgrl Quote

joblo7 Posted October 26, 2007 Posted October 26, 2007 there is conclusive evidence to suggest that using your nally as a pee bottle neutralizes bpa.rinsing with cytomax is recommended. Quote
ericb Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 an equal or greater hazard is that this stuff is common in baby bottles.....we just threw out about $60 worth after reading about similar research on potential effects on infants. Quote

billcoe Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 I got some of the Klean Kanteens recently, and enjoy the fact that the water still tastes good 5 days later. Probably just something else that you will learn is killing you 5 years from now....... They're costly, but one of CC.coms sponsors has them on sale right now cheaper than elsewhere and they're not ungodly expensive: OMC link They should last much longer than plastic. Quote
dmuja Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 As far I know, the "leaching" of the chemicals varies according to the grade/type of plastic. Nalgene is pretty hard stuff and thus may leach less than say "Dasani" water bottles and such - which shouldn't be continuously reused because they degrade sooner and thus may leach more. Plastic pollution overall though is fast becoming the next environmental catastrophe (behind GW) of our age. It may be one factor in causing some "male" Bass near D.C. to turn up with eggs in their sex organs. Suspended microscopic particles of plastic have been found in the most remote ocean waters and in sea life across the globe. If you eat fish, you probly ingesting micro-plastics as well. catbirdseat Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 Do any of you ever wash your Nalgene bottles in the dishwasher? If you do, I suggest that you stop the practice, and here's the reason. Many of the detergents used in dishwashers are formulated at alkaline pH. This tends to break down polycarbonate plastics and release Bisphenol A. Phenols, in general, are poorly soluble in water at neutral and weakly acidic pH, but are much more soluble at alkaline pH. Quote

Explain, please. As for Nalgene bottles leaching estrogen-mimicking compounds that cause men to demonstrate female traits like enlarged breasts, well, I do believe it may explain this: Tvastarketena: Mailbox Peak action figure. JackY Posted October 27, 2007 Posted October 27, 2007 Makes sense that solubility is greater in alkaline pH. Do you know what the mechanism is for migration from the polycarbonate to solution with water? Quote
